My edits of May 24 and 25, 2007

Most of my edit is a translation of de:Geschichte Wiens#Der Krieg in der Luft on German Wikipedia.

  • Introduction: As can be seen clearly from the article quoted above, Allied air raids did have tactical reasons, so I deleted the sentence which stated that there were no military reasons.
  • March 12, 1945: During this raid much more damage was inflicted than only to the Opera House. Much more horrid was the collapsing of the Philipphof which caused the death of hundreds of people in its cellars.
  • Trivia: There were some items that had nothing to do with the bombing, e.g. child mortality, looting by Allied soldiers in the aftermath of the war or the price of a pair of shoes on the black market.

I also think that the bridges crossing the Donaukanal and the Danube (with the exception of the Reichsbrücke, by the way!) at least in part had collapsed not because of Allied bombing but by artillery during the Soviet

Vienna Offensive or were blown up by retreating German troops. I will check this! --Wolfgang glock 22:43, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply

I knew it! Almost all major bridges were destroyed not by Allied bombs but were blown during the Vienna Offensive in mid-April by retreating Wehrmacht troops. Only the Reichsbrücke was saved. See articles listed in de:Kategorie:Brücke in Wien (here it is said only about Schwedenbrücke that it was hit by bombs) and the history of several major Viennese bridges on the official website of the City of Vienna [1]. So, as the damage of bridges mostly has nothing to do with Allied bombing, I deleted the sentece which stated this. --wg 17:16, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MAINZ ist not a district in Vienna!!! It´s a Town in Germany ~750km away ... We have also a "Winterhafen" in Vienna, but there is/was never a oil-refenerie in the winterhafen. Greetings from Vienna --62.178.218.214 (talk) 18:37, 11 November 2011 (UTC) Nordbahnbertl[reply]
