Nomenclature

By "The naming of dogs is inconsistent and capricious." did you mean the naming of dog breeds or the registered-naming bit covered elsewhere? Elf | Talk 21:56, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The naming of breeds. Quill 22:20, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)

breeders in one country might cull out puppies that would be acceptable for show in another country - does "cull" have a special meaning in this context? To me as a general, non-specialist reader, the first meaning that comes to mind is "kill", and it needs to be made clear whether or not that's the actual meaning. 81.151.18.93 03:29, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No, 'cull' simply means 'cull'; it should be interpreted according to the standard dictionary definition: "to cull" is to select or to remove the culls from, culls being that which is inferior or worthless. Culling may include killing what is removed, but that is a step apart from the actual cull. Good comment Quill 23:46, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Above comments moved from Talk:Breed standard as that page was initially used for dog discussions pertaining to breed standards. Sting_au Talk 22:37, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm removing a few things that do not seem to have anything to do with breed standards, but rather have to do with dog showing. --Hafwyn (talk) 13:46, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also the naming of dog breeds does not have anything to do with breed standards, and should be moved to the "Dog Breeds" article. And I know there are many people who feel all dog articles should be loaded up with references to as many diseases as possible, but I'm not sure that they add anything to the understanding of the topic of the article.--Hafwyn (talk) 06:51, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is already an article on

faults, it doesn't seem necessary to have a long section covering the same material here.--Hafwyn (talk) 01:17, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply
