Ancient Coin production

I've corrected a few errors in the section on ancient coins with reference to sources. The one that I didn't find in the (very small) set of articles I checked was that flans were heated "Since the metals that the dies were made out of weren't as hard as modern steel". The Wickens article says the flans were usually hot, but doesn't go into why, or what the exceptions were. Because I didn't find a source for this statement, and it has been disputed (and can't be universally true if the heating is only a "usual" thing), I've moved it to this page. Coin press vs Coin die

Are they the same, or can an analogy be drawn? Chris Buttigieg 15:23, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

European + U.S. outlook

I changed "the Crisis of the Third Century" to "the crisis of the Roman Empire in the 3rd century CE". It wasn't completely clear from the earlier formulation which region of the world was meant. This article generally refers to a European (ancient and medieval) and U.S. (modern) setting, though not explicitly stating this. I think it would be a good idea for future contributors to broaden the perspective. Just a suggestion. Alfons Åberg 00:45, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Formula

Can someone tell me the formula for calculating the production of a coin die (ancient times). If you could also provide the relative reference I would be grateful. Merger proposal

Coin die seems to be a subset of information pertaining to the metalworking process of coining. This article also is lacking a lot of information, where coin die can at least start to populate this page. Also, there isn't enough information between the two articles to warrant the need for multiple articles. --Wizard191 (talk) 16:10, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply

Modern die production

I merged the section in

die making into this section of this article, however there was some discrepancies in the process. I took the info from die making and put it into a hidden comment. Someone with more knowledge about the process that me needs to figure out what is true and what isn't. Wizard191 (talk) 02:10, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply
