According to a note on IMDB, Beethoven was more thoroughly deaf than the film portrays, and had declined to do public performances for years before composing the Ninth Symphony. -- WillWare 18:15, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It was my understanding that Beethoven retained some residual hearing in one ear. I will try to find sources. Could others do likewise? —The preceding

Lipreading? "It can be argued" - according to whom?

The article says: "It can be argued, however, that he was also able to read people's lips, evidenced by his insistence that people face him when they spoke to him."
