six groups?

It seems from six groups of delayed neturons parameters that six isn't enough, and that current use is eight. I will soon bring over the IAEA tables, which have eight groups. Gah4 (talk) 18:46, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This article, like many descriptions of delayed neutrons and reactor operation, makes it sound like a reactor is a homogeneous block of material, but it isn't. The reactivity varies a lot throughout the core, for many reasons. Shape of fuel pellets, rods, control rods, flow and temperature of coolant, moderator, and everything else, is not uniform. It is, then, not that the whole reactor goes from sub-critical to super-critical at once, but instead some small regions cross the line. Some of the work in refueling is to equalize the reactivity through the core so it isn't too far off, but it will always be that some parts are more reactive than others. The RBMK page mentions β, linking to this page. More specifically, it mentions the change in β with upgrades. But this page seems to indicate the U235 has a β, which doesn't sound like it changes.
