Was his character based on Lemmy from Motorhead?

I wonder if it's a coincidence that Derek Smalls was also the name of a well known London armed robber from the period? Maybe there is a connection http://society.guardian.co.uk/societyguardian/story/0,,2074662,00.html —The preceding
