The reference states that some of the text is from the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia but the way it reads, it sounds like the entire entry has been lifted from this Encyclopedia which is now almost 100 years old. Canon Law has changed substantially over the past 100 years with two major code books having been created since then (in 1917 and 1983) and this entry should reflect the current understanding of this term.
