The article begins by saying "Ekiden, usually called a marathon relay in English..." This would suggest that the English term is "marathon relay". Since Wikipedia guidelines are to NOT create multiple articles on the same concept with different language titles and to use the commonly understood term in English, this means this article title should redirect to

marathon relay. However, I wonder if the person that wrote that just misunderstood what makes a word English. From Googling, it does seem that "ekiden" is used a fair amount in English. Just because it was originally Japanese does not mean it cannot be introduced into English as a loan word. If this is the case, then "Ekiden" is the appropriate title. --C S (talk) 11:40, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply

I don`t know anyone who would call it a marathon relay in general, unless they were referring to specific races in which the distance is exactly a marathon distance or speaking loosely. That is more descriptive and not a name. There are so many types of relays. The format and history have such a unique Japanese flavor that I think the Japanese name for it is quite appropriate as a loan word. I think we can rephrase the beginning sentence safely. I have wondered if ekiden is a count noun - ekidens. I also think the last comments about controversy need to be made less judgemental - which I have tried to do. Should we strike that last paragraph, unless documentation is provided? --KantoKaze (talk) 14:43, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ekiden outside of Japan

Are there Ekiden anywhere else in the world? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 133.62.200.185 (talk) 07:26, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
