   Elm Street Methodist Church w/ Civil War Housing Nashville, TN

Description

   Elm Street Methodist Church - The Church was located at the corner of Elm Street and 5th. Ave. So. The year of the photo is around 1864 and the small row houses are quartering residences for the Union Officers when the Union Army occupied Nashville during the Civil War. The church still remains standing although it is now offices for an architecture firm.

Built in 1860, this two-story brick structure in Rutledge Hill was known as Elm Street Methodist Church for over one hundred years. The building was seized by Union forces for use as a hospital during the Civil War. The ornate clock tower cupola of the church was destroyed by fire in 1925, and the damaged front was rebuilt without this original feature.
