Title should be deaths in MMA, not sanctioned MMA

It should be split into two sections, deaths in MMA and then sanctioned MMA. Otherwise there should be another article for deaths in general. comparison to boxing

professional mma is compared to professional boxing in terms of danger of injury.

For injuries, the 2006 study has reasonable statistics suggesting that the rate of incidence is comparable. However, they explicitly exclude brain damage from their scope. Now in terms of fatalities, the rate in professional boxing is pretty well known, based on ample statistics. Svinth (2007) based on the Velazquez collection estimates a death rate for male professional boxers in Nevada at about one death in 6,600 matches. ("76 deaths per million match participants (5 deaths/[293 months x {113 bouts per month x 2 fighters per bout}] x 1,000,000")[1]

So, if boxing and mma were equally dangerous, you would expect two deaths after 13,000 matches. To compare this with mma, we would need to know the total number of sanctioned mma matches during the 2001-2011 period. If the number is much greater than 13,000, the inference could be drawn that to date, mma would appear to be less dangerous than boxing. If the number is much smaller than 13,000, mma would seem to be more dangerous. But with a data base of two incidents, "much" in this case would mean more than 100%, so if there were anywhere between 5,000 and 25,000 sanctioned mma matches, no meaningful conclusion can be drawn.

Now I don't know the total number of sanctioned mma matches. But here is some information of the total number of bouts 1999-2011 organized by the leading promoters:

KOTC.... 2390 fights
Shooto.... 2284 fights
Pancrase.... 1998 fights
Deep.... 1647 fights
UFC.... 1571 fights
M-1 Global.... 1219 fights
Extreme Challenge.... 1184 fights

These numbers add up to close to the 13,000 figure mentioned above. So, based on all of the above, I think it can be said that (based on such slim statistics as there are available to date) it looks like that professional mma is comparable in risk to professional boxing, not just in terms of minor injuries but also in terms of fatalities. --

There are around 20,000 pro boxers active in the world and over a million amateurs as opposed to around 1000 pro MMA fighters. There haven't even been 20,000 pro MMA fights yet. Of course boxing will be higher right now. MMA'a death rate has been getting higher. There were three deaths in 2011 and already in 2012 there have been three deaths. The most recent one happened today, Dustin Jenson of South Dakota died today, suffering a seizure after tapping out to a choke hold. The sentences "Because of the young age of the sport and the small number of fatalities to date, little statistical inference can be drawn. A 2006 study suggests that the risk of injury in general in MMA is comparable to that in professional boxing.[1] " give the impression that there are as many head injuries in mma as in boxing (which would be the main cause of death in boxing and in mma), where as the study itself says there likely is less brain injury because mma fighters generally absorb less blows to the head than boxers. Boxing vs. MMA

This statement, while an interesting bit of trivia, is a bit irrelevant to the subject at hand considering formal MMA has only been around for a relatively short time: "For professional boxing matches, the Manuel Velazquez Boxing Fatality Collection lists 923 deaths during the 118 year period of 1890-2007." Such a number would only be relevant if, say, MMA exceeded that number in its existence (obviously not the case). What we need is the number of boxing fatalities since 2001. A young Portuguese fighter has recently tragically died at a fight in Dublin. Should I just go ahead and add his name to the list?

Four or three?

It seems to me that Tyrone Mims's death is not actually evidentially linked to his fight. I mean, it's unlikely it's a coincidence, I don't deny that, but in terms of a causal link there just isn't enough evidence to establish one. 2.30.97.96 (talk) 23:08, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
