Draft

A new flag for Lincolnshire was unveiled at five separate ceremonies across the county on October 24, 2005. The flag was chosen in a vote by organised by BBC Radio Lincolnshire along with Lincolnshire Life Magazine. The winning entry was selected from a shortlist of six designs and attracted thousands of votes.

The design is the result of a two-year campaign sparked by a letter to County News from two readers keen to raise the county's profile. Fred and Pat Rickett, from Moulton, both keen caravaners, wrote to the paper in 2003, asking why Lincolnshire had no flag that they could fly on caravan rallies. Their plea was taken up by BBC Radio Lincolnshire, which launched a campaign in partnership with Lincolnshire Life magazine. It was supported by many local businesses, who saw it as a good way to promote trade and tourism in Lincolnshire.

The flag features a red cross with a gold fleur de lis in the centre on a blue and green quartered background. A gold border represents the crops grown in the county. The blue on the flag represents the sea and sky of Lincolnshire and the green symbolises the fields, while the fleur de lys represents the City of Lincoln. It was designed by Lincolnshire-born Michelle Andrews, a web producer at BBC Lincolnshire.

Interest in the Lincolnshire flag inspired a similar new flag for the county of Devon [1].

That draft looks MUCH better. I had no idea what the original article was on about (other than advertorial), and this now seems to be about something. Great work. Trxi 09:02, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This story was in the BBC news today [2] A chartered surveyor is hoping to erect Lincolnshire's new flag at the North Pole in an expedition this April (2006). Andrew Pearce, 42, is one of a team of six taking the 70-mile journey over a nine to 10 day period in temperatures as low as -35C. JanesDaddy 16:12, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do I hate the flag cant we get a better one

Proportions of flag image

Are those proportions right? That image is 2:1, and the flag I can see flying from the top of Lincs.C.C. offices appears to be more like 3:2 ... see this image: [3]

  • Addendum: the flags they're selling on the 'official' (official according to whom?) website are 3:2 as well.
