With Firefox on Mac OS, sqlite databases are stored in (source: api doc): Users/<username>/Library/Caches/Firefox/Profiles/{profile}.default/Google Gears for Firefox
Apparently, there's a full text search function, does that mean that data is stored in clear? ie: available without entering any password (eg: for rtm, google reader, google docs)?

Also on Mac OS, with Remember the milk and google gears, you can place a shortcut to rtm on the desktop, that will take to the online or offline mode, depending on your connexion. Trouble is, even if user has logged out, when clicking this shortcut, or later on, opening the url for the user's tasks in firefox, all tasks will be shown with only a small popup in front, asking for login (the tasks list can even be scrolled up or down).

I'm also curious/concerned about Gears Security. Given how hairy the issues are (e.g. potential XSS exploits, etc), I wonder too. Searching the Gears help resources didn't help inform me . Informing readers of a lack of information doesn't seem too encyclopedic tho. Perhaps there have been some patches or updates that we could note. --Elvey (talk) 19:42, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Somebody keeps removing a link to this project, saying that it's a rip-off of the Cultured Code's Things. How come the thn.gs is a rip-off? The action of removing the link to thn.gs seem to be a complete vandalism, and calling service "a rip-off" is a slander. Wikipedia is not the place for such complaints. Thn.gs is just competing product to Things by Cultured Code, and all of the complaints are completely invalid. AmaxSkv (talk) 17:54, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This entry lacks a clear explanation of what Gears is/does. Consider the clear explanation Google itself gives in the Gears FAQ:

What is Gears?

Gears is an open source browser extension that lets developers create web applications that can run offline. Gears provides three key features:

• A local server, to cache and serve application resources (HTML, JavaScript, images, etc.) without needing to contact a server
• A database, to store and access data from within the browser

I can't figure this out: "As of version 0.5.16, Gears is compatible with Internet Explorer 8 but it prevents some of its features" Does that mean that G is preventing IE features, or the other way around? I agree that the article needs better explanation of what Gears does. I have looked at the various help articles on Google and none give other than a purely technical description. Given that Wikipedia is a general ref work for the non-tech reader, I think it would help to give one or two examples of Gears in operation. Explanation by example can help the non-tech user to get a feel of the product.
