Guitar Solo

Back in the 80s it was generally said that Beck's guitar solo (which is undeniably rather cheesy) was a deliberate tongue-in-cheek attempt to emulate the performance of rather less talented formulaic soloists. can anyone find a reference to support this?The Yowser (talk) 16:02, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

use as a football club chant

This aspect of the song is dominating the article. If we can't agree who used it first then I suggest any direct reference is removed, or an anodyne phrase saying 'used by several clubs including' replaces the present tedious conflict! Bob aka Linuxlad 13:20, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have now twice reverted changes to a partisan position from my 'compromise position'. No one has stated a justification for any other form than the one I've argued for here. The detail over which FC really had the chant first is pretty childish and not encyclopaedic material. I shall ask for admin action if we can't find a compromise. The tune has been used by Wolverhampton Wanderers and, indeed, the city of Wolverhampton since its chart debut in the 1960s. This is very much a Wolves anthem and is recognised as such by the majority of football fans throughout the United Kingdom (comparable examples include West Ham United - Forever Blowing Bubbles and Crystal Palace - Glad All Over. Note, I do not include Liverpool as You'll Never Walk Alone was used by all football fans for many years.)

With the greatest of respect, it is unfair for a myriad of other clubs to jump in and claim this as a chant of theirs when this is not what it is. This is The Wolves' Anthem.

I am prepared to compromise something along the lines of other clubs having taken up the idea from WWFC in recent years which is what I have enacted. Meadow Wolf - 13/6/07

With the greatest of respect I fail to see why, as a Derby County supporter, you are concerning yourself with this issue. If in the great scheme of things it is a side issue, why are you so obsessed with this? To say that you 'won't accept any modification' is ridiculous given that this is a publicly written encyclopedia and therefore you have no right to sound so final. Furthermore, I fail to see what evidence can be offered other than the fact that current Wolves supporters today actually remember this being adopted by Wolves fans in the 1960s whilst the tune was in the charts. Visit Wolves messageboards and people will tell you so. It isn't as you put it, the basis of a chant. It is the anthem of Wolves. It is also wholly unfair of you to continuously remove the reference to this being the anthem of the city of Wolverhampton when this is a stark fact!!! What possible objection can you have to this??!!! When I wrote the original, yes the original reference to this tune being used in football by Wolves I included this too city of Wolverhampton point too. As stated previously, I have been willing to compromise and make reference to the fact that other football clubs in recent years have followed suit with regards to using the song as a chant and even go as far as to name some of the other users. Will continue to revert to this version.

Some brief points -

1) The article is about a rather memorable song (and that's why I wrote the first stub). In this context, it's use as a football chant is the side-issue. (My reference to Derby County was intended as humour, and to establish my neutrality in this aspect). 2) I have watched at least two sets of club supporters (Wolves and Sheffield) revert the material in the football chant section to show their club as first users. 3) Neither has offered any factual evidence here. In these circumstances surely, 4) it is best to take a neutral position acknowledging that either both or none of these clubs can claim first use. 5) I do not believe you have yet really attempted this but I am quite happy for you to try. FWIW, on Jeff's original totps live performance, which was recorded and replayed in subsequent editions, I remember him shouting "Up The Spurs" at the end of the first line of the guitar solo. The fact that probably the single most noteworthy and popularly known fact about this song is now entirely unmentioned in the article due to an edit war between two football fans is pretty sad, frankly. How is that a "win" for anyone? CC0Rider (talk) 17:06, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
