Officinalis does not mean "useful"

It means "medical" or "pharmaceutical". Whatever book you got that incorrect meaning from, stop using it to learn Latin and get a real handbook. (For reference, the usual Latin word used in scientific names for the meaning "useful" is utilis, for example Betula utilis, Pandanus utilis, Viburnum utile, or Manihot utilissima.)
