One of the first western references to Kasukabe is in Isabella Bird's 1878 diaries "Unbeaten Tracks in Japan", in which she unflatteringly refers to it as "a good-sized but miserable-looking town." I can't say her opinion is far wrong, even 130 years later. Atanovic 12:21, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
