Czechia, Czech lands, ...

Please try to create consensus about the name here before engaging in revert war. Pavel Vozenilek 19:22, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Is this some sort of a contest between mad scientists? I don't think that your audience is going to be interested in an pseudo-academic dog fight. Why don't you say e.g. "born roughly on the territory of present-day Czech Republic".

What do you think?

In the list?

German people and German&Yiddish speaking many Jewish people:

Proposal to make this list only a list of ethnic Czech people

It's truly a joke to include people like

list of Chinese people. HotelRoom

Everyone happens to be born somewhere (sic!) and these people were born into families living in Bohemia (Freud's family settled in Příbor in 14th century). You cannot exclude them from the list just because they were Jews or their mother tongue was German. Bertha von Suttner comes from one of the most famous Czech/Bohemian noble families (Kinsky) and she does't belong here? You should note, that Bohemia was for centuries inhabited by people of different ancestries (Slavic, Germanic, Semitic) but all of them were Bohemians and therefore have perfect right to be listed here. Sure, Freud or Korngold are more Austrians than Bohemians (and Korngold's US citizenship?), but Klein and Ullmann? They ought to be separated from other Bohemians (Germans, Poles, Spaniards, etc.) just because they were also Jews and are listed elsewhere? To me, double listing is much more acceptable than racial or ethnical cleansing here in Wikipedia. Qertis 20:36, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

I included the people who have some associations with

It should contains people who were part of culture of Czech lands over time (with broad understanding of culture). Which would surely mean Kafka but not Freud. And only more important persons should be here, not everyone who just happens to have an article here.
Attempts of cleanup this list had been done in the past with no avail. Someone would need to write down (here on Talk page) guidelines and enforce them over long time. Pavel Vozenilek 20:55, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
I totally agree with the original author. I took off a lot of people who were really German, Italian, etc who just happened to be living in today Czech republic. They are not ethnic czechs.

I dont think, thats its right to have a liste where are all the man concerning Bohemia (Czechia) if the name of the list are List of Czechs. But to have a List of famous concerning Bohemia {czech republik) wolud be very interesting.

Take down dead links?

Some of the people listed is ridiculous. Someone who is just a regular journalist gets a place? There are a lot of people who are just semi famous that dont even have a page. My philosophy is if they dont have a page they really arent that important. Please try to keep red links off and only list people who have really done something noteable.

Like who? I added some people but all the ones I added were important people who don't have articles yet. I looked over a few too and can't seem to find any that are bad entries. Who's a regular journalist? The philosophy that all dead links should be deleted doesn't make sense. The point of having these pages are so people can be added and obviously most of those people won't have articles yet. If you have a problem with this list, you should really see List of Slovaks. HotelRoom 23:06, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
As for the notability of people in the list, it depends on POV and the definiton of notability. But that's is an obvious problem of all such lists. Of course, as Pavel mentions above, some kind of guideline wouldn't hurt.
As for the inclusion of "red-linked people", problem arises when a notable person doesn't have an article yet. What to do then? Well, I believe it's better to have a link to such person for two reasons: 1) people who work on biographies need to know the demand 2) the reader is given at least some basic information: the name of the person, his or her nationality and that we found the person notable among Czechs. -- Sandius 02:19, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

Needed pruning

I'd say the mass deletion by JJStroker could be taken as promising first step toward cleanup of this list. IMO only the most important persons should be here, the remaining should be covered by a link to relevant category. Pavel Vozenilek 02:14, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

I agree. That is why I removed all of the red links considering most of them are not very famous. I mean we have a million mathmaticians. Can someone please tell me why they should have a sport reserved on the page? It's just makes the page huge. I think they should be taken back down.

JJstroker 22:36, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

The mathematician analogy went over my head..can you rephrase? :(

Anyway, I provided a source for all the people in the painters and scultpors sections as I was familiar with them. With the sources, hopefully, it will inspire some article-making. If someone could do the same for the composers and writers sections, we'd be pretty much set. Antidote 05:53, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

What is so great about a mathmatician? I see it on the same level as adding a doctor. Yes its an accomplishment but do they really need to be on the page? Should we put every Czech doctor who ever lived? Should we put every single professional baseball player who ever lived even if he wasnt good? I think its ridiculous and the article should be reserved for the most successful influential people.

JJstroker 19:33, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

To get back to the topic: first and foremost it is needed to specify who belongs to the list, then to reach some consensus (read: interested people will try to maintain the list instead of going into revert wars), and last the list will be pruned. I've seen several attempts to define a policy here but not enough of people got interested to make something out of it. Pavel Vozenilek 19:20, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Lots of obvious ones are missing

You Czechs have so many famous people you can even forget some of the more obvious names:

  • Juscelino Kubitschek, the legendary former president of Brazil
  • Miroslav Vitous, jazz legend
