"This list of mandolinists includes musicians who are notable for playing the mandolin." Why is it that this list is full of people that either don't play the mandolin, or aren't notable at playing that instrument? Just because their Wiki page says "Mandolin" among a dozen instruments, it doesn't mean that they are notable for playing the mandolin. Would I have permission to clear some of these not-notable examples?(84.178.117.45 (talk) 20:49, 27 November 2009 (UTC))[reply]

You don't need permission from anyone to edit Wikipedia. You are an equal participant here. btw, I agree with you. Dlabtot (talk) 00:17, 28 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I will proceed with removing some names. Whoever feels that it was unfair to remove someone, please provide evidence that the person in question is indeed notable for playing the mandolin, have in mind that not everyone that plays the mandolin is notable.Varimathros (talk) 08:43, 28 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Paul McCartney is an archetypal example of someone who should not be on this list.

Perhaps Paul McCartney has played a mandolin; perhaps he's even played one in live performance or on a recording. Nevertheless, Paul McCartney is notable as a bass player, a songwriter, a singer, and as a member of The Beatles. He is not notable as a mandolinist, and I seriously doubt he would even call himself a mandolinist. Dlabtot (talk) 18:12, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

People who play mandolin - well! - who aren't on this list

Levon Helm from the Band: yes, he's a drummer primarily, but he has provided many mandolin parts to Band tracks (including 'Rockin' Chair', 'Rag Mama Rag' and others. On his solo albums 'Dirt Farmer' and Electric Dirt' he plays mandolin on about 1/2 the tracks

Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull: Yes, he's a flautist, but mandolin is extremely important to his composition and arrangements, and he plays it: 'Christmas Song', 'Fat Man' (an iconic piece among mandolin players)

Larry Campbell is an extremely fine mandolinist: producer - again, with Levon Helm played about 1/3 of the tracks on 'Dirt Farmer'.

Ry Cooder: Low-Commotion springs to mind... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.101.53.102 (talk) 05:02, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct, this is not a list of people who play the mandolin well. It is not even a list of mandolin virtuosos. Thank you for the reminder that these folks, along with the millions of others who play the mandolin well, should not be added to this list. Dlabtot (talk) 19:31, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New list

As if one list wasn't enough, I just created another very similar list, List of mandolinists (sorted). I hope people can tell why the new list. Wouldn't it be nice to have all this in fields like database?Jacqke (talk) 00:33, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The problem with the new list is that its entries are not supported by citations.·maunus · snunɐɯ· 01:36, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You're right. I will add them as I can, probably before culling too many names.Jacqke (talk) 02:05, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
