I think the List of mayors of Vancouver is a lot more organized and clean. As just a suggestion I think we should consider reformatting this list to a similar format. Ideas anyone? --Zippanova 05:20, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

I am okay with it being either a bulleted list or a table. So, if you want to switch it, go right ahead. Note that I do not believe that Calgary has ever used political party affiliations in elections, which is one of the columns in the Vancouver list. As a side note, we probably would have had a few different results: Calgary tends to vote conservative in provincial and federal politics, but has had a few Liberal mayors recently. If you do switch, please do not reduce the dates to just the year. I believe that the actual dates of tenure is valueable information. -- JamesTeterenko 05:30, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have two main reason for this:

• The links being re-inserted are not the links to the actual articles of the mayors. For example
  James A. Reilly is the link to the article about the mayor, James Reilly
  is a disambiguation page for multiple people with that name.
• A list of mayors is not something that needs to be taken verbatim from a specific "copyrighted" source. You may have used a specific source to update the list, and it is great that you were able to fill in a few missing dates. However, the original information was obviously not derived from the source you listed, as it would have had that missing information.

It is really small wonder that so many of us give up in frustraton trying to navigate the complex web of how and where to contact the proper person for editorial remedy.

In this case, it seems utterly ridiculous, outrageous and offensive that some would-be "smart person" keeps restoring the error every time it is corrected; and now it is frozen "in situ" with a block preventing further correction. I regard this as a flagrant example of vandalism, yet I feel as though I am being treated as the vandal.

In reference to the List of Mayors of Calgary, to which I have made many improvements, Mayor James Reilly keeps showing up incorrectly as James A. Reilly. Please note that his christening record in Quebec indicates no other name than James. His marriage registration in Quebec indicates no other name. His death certificate in British Columbia indicates no other name. His tombstone at Calgary indicates no other name. His biographies and even his obituaries indicate no other name. None of his property deeds indicate any other name. Civic documents, Council Minutes, Nomination Papers, Civic Election results and signed Oaths of Office indicate no other name. His signature indicates no other name. Even his own relatives know of no other name. Never at any time does anything indicate any other name, save one single source, the newspaper report of the results of an election in the Calgary area of the North West Territories, which he lost. This is scarcely the most authoritative source.

This error has obviously been picked up by and crept into records (such as those of the Glenbow) along the way. The City of Calgary Archives does not accept it. I am sure the City Archives will tell you that I have a deeper knowledge of these matters than most anyone. I am also certain that if I were to point out these facts, my contacts at the Glenbow would take the issue seriously as well.

In my studied opinion this singular error may result from any of several causes. Amongst these might be included: (1) the possibility that this is a different James Reilly, (admittedly highly improbable); (2) an absent minded blunder either by an electoral official, or by a newspaper reporter, editor or typesetter, either accidentally or because, even back then, just as now, some know-it-all thought he knew better; or (3) the receiving of a "Confirmation Name", which is a new name added upon Confirmation into the Roman Catholic Church. In the latter case this would not normally be recognised or appear in any other situation or for any official purpose, and all the more so in view of his subsequent eschewal of Roman Catholicism.

I think the weight of the preponderance of evidence above should establish once and for all that there is insufficient justification to ascribe to Mayor Reilly any given forename apart from James, and that the one source from which various others have since accorded him one, is far too flimsy to outweigh all the evidence to the contrary. This reasoning hardly constitutes vandalism, as the obstinate perpetuation of the error would seem instead to do. 72.25.192.4 (talk) 23:02, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
