Ship Propulsion

Unusual for its time, MS American Leader was indeed a diesel powered ship as were 9 other C1-B cargo ships. The details of the power plant and reduction gearing are found in the US Maritime specifications"Maritime Commission Design C1-B". (Frank A.Gerhardt,usmaritimecommission.de). Retrieved 2 March 2012. Further, the personal accounts of George Duffy, a survivor of the American Leader crew, refer to the vessel as MV American Leader. I have not found anything to indicate if the hulls of any other ships constructed at Western Pipe and Steel were welded or if American Leader was a one-off prototype. The vessel was scarcely in service long enough to make any evaluations, although Captain Duffy's accounts make no mention of any mechanical problems. Mariepr (talk) 01:49, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Date Discrepancies

The references show different dates for the American Leader launch date and for the sinking or the Empire Dawn. The Maritime Commission description states that her launch was 8 October 1940 while the external link to her launching video states the date as 16 October 1940. That's only one week difference but enough to call question to the accuracy of other dates. Second, Duffy's recollection of the sinking of Empire Dawn place it at two days after American Leader was sunk, which would make it 12 September 1942. Other references have Empire Dawn being sunk he next day with would be the 11th. I've edited this section to place Empire Dawn as sunk on the 11th. Mariepr (talk) 13:41, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
