It could be wise to move the hole History section of the article to a History of Mar del Plata article for better readability, leaving only a short review of the most important facts. Thank you for the idea, Mariano. I will working on these changes as soon as possible. The formatting of the article about Rosario is an example of what you hint. I will leave just a timeline for the MDQ History section and move the bulk of the text to an entire new article. Best regards.

Would it be worth mentioning that "Mar del Plata" literally means "the Sea of the Silver" in English? I added that, and somebody removed it. P/S: another strong evidence is the masculine gender of the article in the contraction "del" ("of the" in English). "Plata" (the metal) is a female noun in Spanish; "El Plata" (river) is masculine. "The Sea of the Silver" would be "Mar de la Plata" in Spanish.--

It does. The River Plate is an anglicization of El Rio de la Plata, done by the British during the 19th century. Plate is a lazy, non-translation of Plata if you will. Darius' comment on the gender of Mar del Plata does seem to mean that it refers to the river, which borders the local sea. The water of the River Plate estuary turns to sea water around the northern end of Samborombón Bay, (Mar del Plata is at the southern end of the bay), with an intermediate brackish estuarine water inbetween. Clearly the sea around Mar del Plata can be seen as an extension of the estuary, or even vice versa. The wikipedia article on Rio de la Plata is very helpful and the NASA photograph clearly shows the division between estuary and sea.
