Additional Information

there are a few common themes of narrative identity that have been left out. one for example is the performance narrative that is found mostly in athletes (Carless & Douglas 2013) i would like to include more detail concerning that subject. i would also like to add more information to the applications section, including athletes and more on psychotherapy. there is more i would like to add but this is the main starting point. Improvements

There are several improvements that I would like to make on this article. The "development" section should be expanded upon. There are many factors of development that the article is missing, such as the role that parents play in their children's narrative sophistication. Also, the article does not describe how meaning making specifically improves over the course of adolescence (McAdams, 2013).

In addition, the wikipedia article does not mention some life-story constructs that are very important in narrative identity research. For instance, the degree of meaning making in a narrative is often indicative of the type of story that the author tells (McLean, 2005). The article also does not explain how life story constructs employed in narratives can aid the storyteller in adapting to negative events in his or her life (McAdams, 2013).

Additions

I would like to expand on the development section using information from Pasupathi and Hoydt 2009 about the importance of listeners on the development of narrative identity. I would also like to add to the psychotherapy section with the insights of Adler in 2012, who discusses the change in narrative identity in conjunction with changes in mental health and the practical applications of this correlation. I could also add to the personality psychology section using information from Pals in 2006, who compares narrative identity development to subsequent personality development. Too much psychology?

Obviously narrative identity is a major idea in psychology, but as the page stands it looks as if psychologists (and especially psychologists in the Anglo-American tradition) have a monopoly on this subject. There is no mention, for instance, of the roots of the idea in the philosophy of French theorist Paul Ricoeur (who actually coined the term), nor of his own debts to Phenomenalism and Psychoanalysis. The result is a very skewed and rather superficial discussion of 'narrative identity' with no mention of its importance to disciplines such as history, literary studies and philosophy. I would suggest a radical overhaul. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.62.216.188 (talk) 08:14, 4 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
