Patron saint: who and why?

More intuitively it should have been Simon the Leper, not the one from the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. The two were probably conflated into one, or the 'sores' of the parable Lazarus interpreted as leprosy and the explicit leper forgotten, maybe because the parable was theologically more attractive, but this needs an explanation.
