The list of external links is starting to exceed a reasonable ratio of content to links. A random sampling of click-throughs indicates a mix of government/Chamber of Commerce links, premium membership-supported advertising sites, special event sites, businesses, etc. Many of these probably fail

OK, so, is the stuff in this article about the Paso Robles Inn cadged from their website, or did their website just lift it from Wikipedia? The pronunciation should definitely be just /ˈpæ.sə ˈɹoʊ.bəlz/ but also the IPA doesn't match the phonetic spelling given either. 2WR1 (talk) 13:04, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"El Paso de Robles" is translated in this article and elsewhere as "The pass of the oaks," but a literal translation would be just "The pass of oaks." This is certainly a very trivial point, and even the city's official website uses the second "the" when translating the name, so I'm inclined to just leave it alone, but how do others feel?

One point that just occurred to me is that "the pass of the oaks" is more idiomatic in English and would thus be a better, if not more literal, translation.

The best English translation of "el paso de robles" would be "oak pass". Both "the pass of the oaks" and "the pass of oaks" are inferior translations as they fail to account for a syntactical difference between English and Spanish (1). To provide the greatest clarity to its English-speaking readership, the best translation should be used in this site rather than inferior translations reproduced elsewhere.

1. A noun adjunct is common English usage to modify "pass". In geographic usage, a pass or paso is a "a low place in a mountain range". Among the 398 California place names in the United States Geological Survey database that include "pass", all 398 use the syntax "X pass" and 0 use the syntax "pass of the X".
