    • Yes, it's a surname, but Linus Pauling is in my eyes far and away the best known person with that surname. I've already explained Ava Helen above, and Tom Pauling is the only other example listed on the disambiguation page right now, and he frankly is nowhere near as well known as Linus. The first full page of Google results for me are about the scientist, and dictionary.com and Merriam-Webster have dedicated entries for him using just the surname, showing that he is referred to by surname alone (like Edison for example).
