I have made some additions to the main body and the end but can't dig up any citations at the mo. I can't remember the name of the pass that leads down from Masvingo to the Lowveld currently the route of the old road parallel with the new one. Anybody know? I'll come back to the text later if there are no problems with the content. My father used to own some books written by Selous and others that would give useful source material but I don't think he still has them anymore.........--AssegaiAli 21:54, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The page on the pioneer column contains some weasel words.e.g. "in the area of Mashonaland which was ruled by the King by use of coercion and murderous raids involved tribute-taking and abduction of young men and women." That's not only an oversimplification, but it's a red herring and clearly weasel-worded. And again, the entire section on Consequences surely needs to have a more scholarly tone, and universal perspective?193.60.83.241 (talk) 06:59, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can make out the section in quotes is not either weasel words or vague. The language is direct. Please explain how it is a red herring or is not true.--Mountwolseley (talk) 21:47, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think the consequences section is fine. What does 'more scholarly' mean anyway? I have a feeling that saying "clearly weasel-worded" is actually using
weasel words anyway so....--94.196.180.120 (talk) 08:39, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply

Considering that there seems to be no further discussion on this matter, and support for the original criticisms seems to be lacking-I shall remove the warnings on the page.--AssegaiAli (talk) 12:46, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Consequences Section

Can this section be edited to lessen the glorifying of "modern world of the West" and talk about the consequences of the destruction of the local economy through "forcing African men to leave their herds and their barter economy to join the cash economy of the West via wage labour." Also, who was "new elite" that "snatched control from the Iron Age monarchy"? Some citations would also be nice. Ahseaton (talk) 20:19, 30 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Influence on Culture

Some WIKI Pages have a list of films and books inspired by the topic/event. It might flesh this article out. Wasn't "Breaker Morant" about this era? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.89.140.11 (talk) 22:00, 30 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

consequences

just made this account specifically for this so i don't know the official wikipedia terms but the consequences section is a racist, poorly sourced simplification that reads more like gloating than anything else. Bigboyseason (talk) 01:21, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

can provide sources & backing for all of this

"iron age": not a useful or accurate term here, its a prehistorical concept relevant at best 2 europe/mediterranean

"poorly developed backwaters" for 400 years: not true, rozwi state had large presence in regions until mid-19th c & even after weakening/collapse local polities/communities were part of extensive trade network w/ north, east, west. for most africans settler occupation marked regression in development - african communities pushed off best land for euros, profit from mines, trade, agriculture hoarded by euros or exported back to SA/england.

"retained power through demonstrating overwhelming technological superiority & towering confidence in achievements": how does one retain power with 'towering cconfidence'? how can that be measured? what does that even mean? reads like something written by a larping teen. britain retained power by impoverishing & fragmenting local communities & brutally crushing any attempted resistance

"a new elite": mealy-mouthed. the 'new elite' was a white supremacist settler class who proceeded to violently exploit indigenous pop while establishing a quasi-apartheid administration so entrenched it would last 80 yesrs & require a violent overthrow Bigboyseason (talk) 01:40, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

section on hut tax is ridiculous too. this wss so disastrous and patently greedy that it caused 2 extremely bloody rebellions within 10 years that united the kings culture with the people the author says they "murderously raided" Bigboyseason (talk) 01:42, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV Dispute

This article, particularly the "Consequences" section, has long-standing issues with maintaining a neutral point-of-view. Please see the contributions on this talk page by user Bigboyseason and by user Ahseaton. Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.18.207.147 (talk) 02:38, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Consequences section

As noted by @ahseaton, @Bigboyseason and amon user above the consequences section was heavily NPOV and glorified colonialism. I also suspect it might be plagiarism, but I don't have access to the 1985 Encylopedia cited. I've replaced it with a brief text linking to the next major events in the land.
