Potty Bar

"Potters Bar is also known as 'Potty Bar' owing to its large collection of Indian restaurants." I've never heard it called this, has anyone else? In any case it should be "Potters Bar is sometimes referred to as 'Potty Bar' owing to its large collection of Indian restaurants." Bangers 14:57, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nada. I've removed it. Simply south 18:57, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sewage system

I'm going to remove the line Our sewage system is simply fantastic unless someone can provide a citation. I can't find any reference to it and I really can't believe anyone would really say it. Bangers 07:09, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Now removed. It was placed there by Newopen22 who seems to have put a number of other 'joke' comments into different articles Bangers 12:28, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notable People

I've removed Chris Pearson because I've never heard if him and google doesn't get a hit for him with any professional club in England. Bangers 23:01, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hidden Tunnels?

Is there actually evidence that the hidden tunnels exsist under Mount Grace? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.129.132.18 (talkcontribs)

I've lived in Potters Bar for a number of years and have never heard this story. It looks like an ex-pupil has added a dead granny —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bangers (talkcontribs)

I've heard this rumour about several schools in the area, but whilst I was in Primary School. It seems quite pervasive of many schools in fact, not limited to Mount Grace, or Potters Bar for that matter. 82.6.55.244 21:19, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In DAOS, i never heard it. Simply south 11:31, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is a small stream/brook/whatever near the golf course that goes underground about half way between the school and the station. This is where the confusion stems from. I have removed the bollocks from the main entry in light of this

Apprently It goes all over Potters Bar Under Tesco, There is a oppening At Mount Grace School.

Train Crash

Is "train derailment" really the right words to use? The media in general have all called it "Train Accident" or "Train Crash". Derailment makes it sound rather less serious than it was, after all the train carriage ended up on its side, and not only resting on the platform (about 0.75m above the tracks) perpendicular to the direction it was travelling (at 90mph IIRC), but actually suspended across the tracks resting on two platforms and wedged under the roof! I'd call that a crash not a derailment.

Unrealistic sentence removed

I removed the sentence

Potters Bar is the highest point above sea level in western Europe (apart from Mont Blanc).

since I strongly do not belive it can be real. AnyFile 22:37, 5 January 2007 (UTC) I have also remove the sentence[reply]

and is known aptly as the Gateway to the North.

added in the same editing that added the above sentence. AnyFile 22:37, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good move AnyFile...I couldn't resist pointing out the stupidity of the statement about height above sea level by adding the Mont Blanc reference but was going to sort it out this evening anyway. (Don't seem to have been logged in at the time, my mistake.) It probably *is* true that there is nowhere (due) East of Potters Bar in Europe which is higher, but that's hardly interesting as it applies to quite a lot of places in the UK.

What I don't know is whether the "Gateway to the North" claim is sound. It's kind of plausible but would only be said with a healthy does of British irony (and thus hardly suitable for Wikipedia)!

Drummle 00:45, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Another user has added the same edit about it being the highest point with a strange claim of non-existant gas works on mutton lane. At least i've never seen them there. If referring to the great north road that is actually a large ventillation shaft for the pb rail tunnel. Still, living nearby i have never heard of highest point. 147.197.251.136 11:07, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actions speak louder than words (ie I've reverted that edit). If you're a local have you ever come across the "Gateway to the North" name? Drummle 00:10, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually Brookmans Park is higher than Potters Bar, thats why Brookmans Park has the radio station. Govvy 10:39, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Admiral Byng

John Byng as far as I knew had an estate in Potters Bar and I think the Byng family still own a lot of land in Potters Bar to this day. Does anyone else know about this? Govvy 10:39, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Byng Drive and the Admiral Byng pub were named after him, i think. Any help? Simply south 15:26, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Very ikkle help! I feel we should be able to incorporate some information about him into the article. Govvy 15:58, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removed text

The is also the Wyllyotts Centre which hosts a joint theatre and cinema. Events for child of plays and films. The centre even hosts sporting events such as boxing and armature wrestling.

Not sure what this is trying to say, and couldnt work it out to edit so I have removed it. MRSCTalk 22:21, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

First word should be There basicly Wyllyotts Centre is one of the main entertainment area's of Potters Bar. Has a theatre and a cinema. Has halls and such, they host boxing, armature wrestling and other sporting events. Govvy 22:26, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. MRSCTalk 22:34, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't just host sports events. I have also added about the museum. Simply south
The events venue does not just include sports. There have been other events such as concerts of various sorts. Simply south 13:53, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Parks

Do you think some of the Town's parks and conservation area's should be noted? Govvy 00:11, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Parkfield, Oakmere Park and the playing fields around the Furzefield Centre. Why not?!... Anyway, Oakmere Park plays an important role in the town's history. Simply south 00:26, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pottrels Bare

I got an old replica map of Hertfordshire and Potters Bar is spelt Pottrels Bare. I am not sure how to implement it into the article, but I thought it interesting, the replica map has a date of 1471. Govvy (talk) 16:56, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Defining paragraph

I've revised the introductory paragraph. First of all it's clearly nonsense to claim that PB remained "unchanged" for six centuries. This is a gross misreading of the PB history site cited. Secondly, I see no need to include the 2002 rail crash as a defining characteristic six years on. In any case, the rail crashes are dealt with in more detail later in the article.--Shantavira|feed me

gibbett

At grammar school, I recollect my english teacher stating that Potter Bar was an old Gibbet from London - it a bar upon which crmiminals heads were exposed....and it was removed and dumped outslide london at Potters Bar - this seems unlikely but any comments?

I don't know if Potters Bar had a gallows, but if you read the Etymology section you will see it's part of the coaching inn toll road system of the Great North Road. So there may have been something near the Green Man Pub. However unless had a published source for you information nothing could be confirmed. Govvy (talk) 12:52, 3 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pubs in Potters Bar

There is some history to the Pub's in Potters Bar, I am surprised that only the Green Man in mentioned. The oldest Pub The Manor isn't mentioned, nor is the Bridge Pub which was knocked down and converted into flats. I think that was part of the cannel network which once had small trading boats that were on their way to London with trade goods. It might be a good idea to write something about the pubs. Schools generally have their own article why should you merge? Govvy (talk) 12:56, 14 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Primary schools generally don't. Have you read
well referenced to warrant an article. This article has zero references and, from reading the article, extremely low notability. There really is no reason to keep it as a separate article. CalzGuy (talk) 20:34, 14 January 2017 (UTC)[reply

Delete it then. Govvy (talk) 00:08, 15 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Middlesex

The information that PB is in Hertfordshire is false. The town remains in the historic county of Middlesex. Only its postal county changed in 1965. General.tactifer (talk) 14:18, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The historical county of Middlesex is historical.
WP:UKCOUNTIES says:

Editors must be mindful of fostering and/or introducing anachronism into former county articles. Use language that asserts past tense - We do not take the minority view that the historic counties still exist with the former boundaries.
