in quinte west ,ontario. what is the french speaking population? and why are there no signs in french if the french speaking population is 5% or more?{copyrighter}.

there is a small french speaking population here at the air base, because the majority of air force personal only stationed in the area are French Canadians. Also, alot of the younger generation here speak french because of french immersion. there is also a small minority of

Franco-Ontarians around here. and to answer your question about signs in French, it's not as if we're a French speaking community, here French is only spoken by Quebeckers living in Quinte or by French Immersion students, its more of an immigrant language. -Mike Oosting (talk) 00:38, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply

Strictly speaking, it was the City of Trenton that was already a separated municipality. Quinte West didn't exist then so logically it could not have been "formerly" part of Hastings. I've reworded the sentence for improved accuracy about what "separated municipality" actually means — it's an administrative separation, but does not mean that Quinte West is geographically or statistically not part of Hastings. However, strictly speaking the fact that Trenton was a separated municipality does not in and of itself prove that Quinte West isn't; in point of fact, the UWO source does explicitly say that Quinte West does still hold "separated municipality" status (p. 5: "Today, eighteen cities and towns in Ontario remain separated: Barrie, Windsor, Guelph, London, Kingston, Peterborough, Orillia, Pembroke, Brockville, Prescott, Gananoque, Cornwall, Smiths Falls, St. Thomas, Belleville, Quinte West, Stratford and St. Mary’s.") The edit "...is a city, geographically located in but administratively separated from Hastings County, in Southern Ontario, Canada..." is a more accurate, if somewhat inelegant, opening to the article :-)

Of course the fact that Trenton was already separated is neither here nor there as to whether Quinte West is. I think it could be argued though that if Quinte West inherited the separated legal status from Trenton (rather than have separated status bestowed upon it qua Quinte West), then on some level Quinte West is nothing more than the "new" Trenton. Otherwise what does the 'still' mean in the phrase "...still holds..."? I find the amalgamation very intriguing as legal transition. Did Murray/Sidney/Frankford join Trenton (as separated municipality) THEN collectively they became Quinte West? Or did Trenton (separated municipality) become Quinte West (separated municipality) to which Murray/Sidney/Frankford were appended? NWG123 (talk) 16:13, 19 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
