Rhodri

The Welsh name Rhodri does not mean 'Red King' and is not equivalent to Ruaidhri - Rhodri means 'Wheel King' (rhod 'wheel' + ri 'king') Cecil B. Palsy (talk) 00:45, 14 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Gender

@Gaelicbow: Throughout the history of this article, editors have disagreed on whether the name should be listed as strictly male or as unisex. Here are some points supporting the latter.

  • While it is predominantly a masculine name, it is not exclusively so; the page itself lists prominent female individuals called Rory.
  • The article does indeed state that the name is, "rarely given to females," but this applies specifically, "In Ireland and Scotland," and not globally: see below point.
  • As of 2021, the name is ranked at '396' for females and '295' for males in the United States. While this indicates that the name is still more popular among males, it also shows that it is not by any means, "hardly ever given to females," worldwide.
  • A majority of baby-name websites agree that the name is gender-neutral. While these may not be reliable sources (and as such should not be cited), they do show a common agreement that the name is indeed unisex.
  • The name is also listed on the separate Wikipedia page Unisex name, indicating a possible consensus on this matter. Itsrorybd (talk) 08:19, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

We can put "unisex" in the infobox, but let's leave male or unisex out of the lead, so it could read simply "Rory is a given name of Gaelic origin". Unisex in the infobox will need a citation. Gaelicbow (talk) 12:26, 31 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have added the necessary citation now. Itsrorybd (talk) 13:53, 31 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@216.130.86.33: @SaoiDunNeachdain: Please refer to this talk page regarding the topic of the name's gender. If you would like to change or challenge the source in use currently, kindly refrain from utilizing original research. Itsrorybd (talk) 21:09, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There are now five citations for the name being unisex in the infobox. The gender listed in the infobox has also been split, by region, into both "masculine" and "unisex" in an attempt to deter controversy. Despite this, the gender of the name keeps being changed to "masculine", with the entire infobox often becoming malformed as a result of these unconstructive edits. Please stop changing the gender of the name; the page is becoming increasingly less comprehensive as a result of it. The history of the name relating to its use among different genders is adequate in reflecting its real-world usage across different regions. Requesting dispute resolution is a real pain and I really would rather not have to. Itsrorybd (talk) 18:17, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
