After almost 50 years of comparably insignificant existence, SC Verl advanced to the Landesliga Westfalen (IV) in 1970. Since then, SC Verl relegated only once (in 2003), qualified for newly-introduced higher-class leagues three times, won their league twice, and played the promotion round for 2. Bundesliga once. Had they won that promotion round, SC Verl would have been the smallest town ever to field a German pro football team, but they failed to advance.

In 2003, a 15th place finish in the Regionalliga Nord (III) saw the team sent down for the first time in over thirty years. They had to spend four years in the Oberliga Westfalen (IV) before winning the championship and advancing to Regionalliga again in 2007. After half the 2007/08 season, the Regionalliga will be re-structured, with a Third League introduced between the Zweite Bundesliga and the Regionalliga, which will in turn be split up from two into three divisions. After a weak first half, SC Verl is ranked 16th (out of 19), and is likely to relegate to fourth tier again at the end of the season.

Having played at least fourth tier since 1970, and 17 consecutive seasons in the third tier, makes SC Verl one of the most consistently successful teams of Germany's amateur football. In their current Regionalliga season, they are not only one of the smallest towns to field one of Germany's top 73 football teams, but also reputedly the only one with no liabilities, a direct result of a continued policy of "no credit financing".

I think that right now it stands as a short simple read that is somewhere in between being too detailed and too simplistic, which is something that can be hard to do with some of the smaller, less storied clubs. It is also laid out as an easy to follow chronology. There's a couple of good additions in the updated stuff, such as the emphasis on the success of beating Borussia Mönchengladbach, the club's consistency, and its financial record (which especially distinguishes it from so many others).

I personally find that adding a lot of really current detail or making predictions can be a problem because that type of information is constantly changing. Unless you have an article that is a hot topic or someone who is doing serious caregiving, it quickly goes stale. That's a particular problem with many of the smaller German clubs.

I just deleted the "noteable players" section in its entirety. First, noteables were already mentioned under "Famous Players" above. Second, the list provided made the impression of being a list of all former players the author could remember, with the impact most of them made on soccer being minimal, if at all existent. (Not wanting to belittle their efforts, and some are still held in fond memories by SCV supporters, but they aren't "noteable" in the Wikipedia sense.) -- DevSolar (talk) 11:36, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding this edit: Several players have dual citizenships. There has been a discussion (the link to which I cannot find ATM) that stated that giving both nationalities is not wanted, so we have to decide on one. Since a team may only field so-and-so-many non-native citizens, the fact that these players also have the German citizenship is important, while their other nationality isn't (for the sake of the article about SC Verl). PS: weltfussball.de lists all three players as German, scverl.de lists Kaminski as German. I cannot reach transfermarkt.de ATM, but I am sure that is where I got the information on the dual citizenships from. Zombie433, what is your source? -- DevSolar (talk) 08:00, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
