Oops, should have made that table 90degrees the other way round.

I am going to start/have started a few articles about prominent councils - see list at User:Morwen/councils to see what we have already. I think we can have X and X City Council, but probably should merge Y (district) and Y district council or Metropolitan Borough of Z and Z Borough Council. That is, there can be maybe three things

  • the core place
  • the district
  • the council of the district

but we would only ever have two articles. In the case of Oadby and Wigston we'd merge the council article into that, as well. This is because I don't think district articles are going to ever have enough content - certainly many of them at the moment are only few sentences. Obviously if content gets too big we would split out. Morwen - Talk 16:42, 2 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This sounds like a good idea, although like you say, decisions on merging or splitting articles will need to depend in part on their length. For instance, Sheffield City Council could have fitted into the Sheffield article quite comfortably, as it already covers the district, but as it is a fair length and the Sheffield article is pretty long, it makes sense to have this separate article. I suppose you could ask whether the district really exists, except as the Council or as lines on a map, but people do regard them as different concepts. In essence - go for it!
