I deleted a lot of the additions to "notable businesses" because the businesses added were not "notable." "Notable" refers to businesses that are known throughout the world/country or region. A supermarket is just a supermarket, a car parts store is just a car parts store, a notary service is common in thousands of towns all over the country. But "Smethport Specialities" sells their products world wide, and are "notable" for holding patents on their products. As are the makers of "Wooly Willy," which was the highest selling toy in the country as one point in history, and likewise holds patnets for their products. No offense--but the page isn't for personal advertising. the businesses here are ones that many people know throughout the area. I kept Hamlin Bank as well, as they are headquarted in Smethport and have banks all over McKean County and have contributed much to the economy and the area in general. —Preceding unsigned comment added by JIMMYLINE (talkcontribs) 11:56, 15 October 2008 (UTC) --Jim Line (talk) 11:46, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I changed family name deSmeth into De Smeth, for this is the correct spelling of this Dutch family name. deSmeth may be a misreading of the Dutch name. e.g. Jacob de Smeth becomes Jacob deSmeth. (De is written in lower case when preceeded by a person's first name) Quarconi (talk) 13:20, 12 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned references in Smethport, Pennsylvania

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Smethport, Pennsylvania's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 22:52, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Removed inaccurate climate data

Climate data was added in 2015 with pretend numbers to make the climate seemcolder. Hi & lo were 26 deg apart on almost all months and far colder than environs. Proper data was never added. Soap 21:05, 29 January 2018 (UTC) originally signed as Lollipop (talk · contribs)[reply]

And although there is climate data available, it is extremely old, and would make the town seem colder than it likely is today. The -42F record was set in 1904, and there appears to have been no functioning weather station in the town since 1905. The climate has changed considerably in the past 115 years. The following statement was removed: "Smethport holds the United States record for both most rainfall recorded in 12 hours (34.30 in) and most rainfall recorded in three hours (28.50 in.). Both records were set on July 18, 1942." The citation for this statement used a now-broken link to a Weather Channel page (incidentally, a more recent Weather Channel link indicates the inaccuracy of the purported rainfall records[1]. Regardless, verifiable weather extremes should be sourced from NOAA's State Climate Extremes Committee[2]. Minus40 (talk) 17:17, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It would be nicer and a lot easier if they didn't move their pages around every few years without leaving a forwarding link. But thank you, ...you've done a very good thing and I didn't pick up on it even as I was so sure I'd rooted out all of the false information. Soap 16:06, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
