DanielKeeran 15:58, 15 July 2007 (UTC)I visited Saint Doulagh's a few weeks ago. After also seeing many baptismal fonts throughout Italy, France, and Spain, I believe there is no doubt the octagonal structure is a large baptismal pool with a central spring (St.Catherines Well) as the water source and an additional rectangular basin that could be used to avoid filling up the larger space. There are even seats built into the back of the octagonal area. The small stone chapel built over the Well was to allow it to be locked to prevent using the water for other purposes. This entire area was constructed when immersion was the dominant practice and so must date before the 12th century. Does anyone know of other studies or sources of information on this site?
