Christian martyrs
One has to ask: would some early Christian martyrs be considered cases of "suicide by proxy"? is there any discussion of this possibility in the secondary literature? Reading these ancient saints' lives -- which in some cases are based on transcripts of the actual court cases -- one gets the sense that the judges honestly did not want to order the person to be executed, & looked for some way to conclude the case in a less severe method -- say confiscation of property or exile. Yet the accused would repeat, "I am a Christian! I want to die for my belief!" They embraced a belief of Christianity very few would be comfortable with nowadays, despite their strength of faith. -- llywrch (talk) 04:53, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
