Musical standards

Despite this wanton abandonment of Bowie’s musical standards

"Wanton abandonment"? Apart from the chipmunk backing vocals, this actually isn't all that far removed from the other stuff he was doing in 1967 - "Love You Till Tuesday" et al. Bowie was all for childlike lyrics and bubblegum playfulness at that stage of his career; it's not as if he had lapsed from something like Ziggy Stardust in order to do "The Laughing Gnome". 217.155.20.163 12:56, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removed in the recent rewrite... Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 14:48, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The assertion that it is a pastiche of Tony Newley doesn’t have any citations - isn’t this just original research? Just as he wasn’t “abandoning standards” to do this, the use of the word “pastiche” seems to suggest that he was being subversive or ironic, when, as the earlier comment says, this was as much his modus operandi of the time as anything else. It could have been intended as an imitation or homage to Newley, which would reflect differently upon it than pastiche suggests. Had this been a huge hit, he might had far more material like this in his back catalogue. Jock123 (talk) 09:27, 18 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rumour-source wanted

I've seen a claim that Bowie said he considered doing it in a 'Velvet Underground' (I assume that means drone?) arrangement on his Sound+Vision Tour until he found out about the NME was behind the campaign. I'm sure this is probably a myth, but if anyone has a source please let me know. Blythwood (talk) 14:11, 29 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Updated now I've found a comment about it on Bowie's website. Blythwood (talk) 20:56, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
