Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on June 16, 2010.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that Thimphu (pictured) is the capital city of Bhutan?

Traffic Lights?

"Thimphu is the only national capital in Asia that does not have traffic lights."

According to a recent televised ABC news special, Pyongyang in North Korea employs human crossing guards instead of stop lights at intersections. However, I'm going to hold back on editing this since there are basically no authoritative sources on what Pyongyang is like as a whole. Pork davis 04:23, 9 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

According to this NYTimes article dated May 7, 2009 [1], "...the capital city has no stoplight and just one traffic officer on duty." I'm not sure where the Times got its information from, but we should probably use the singular in "... police that directs the oncoming traffic with their ..." unless there's evidence to the contrary. Lalala666 (talk) 04:09, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article has the following sentences with contradictory meaning:

  • The city has all civic amenities such as well planned wide roads with traffic police controlling the traffic (as it is the only capital city in the world with no traffic lights)
  • The unique aspect of Thimphu roads and the traffic control over the road net work is that it is one of the two national capitals in Asia that does not have traffic lights (the other is Pyongyang, North Korea).

I think this should be review and fixed. Thanks! --Agustincm (talk) 15:17, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bhutan Scout Tshogpa

Can someone help render Bhutan Scout Tshogpa, and also "Be Prepared", the Scout Motto, into Dzongkha script? Thanks! Chris 07:32, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Updates needed

e.g.

  • With on going preparations for the 2008 celebrations of 100 years of Monarchy and Bhutan's transition to Parliamentary Democracy, numerous construction projects are visible throughout the city. - are they still visible in 2010? - I have visited today Thimphu and the constructions projects for the coronation have finished. However, lots of new buildings are currently being constructed as Thimphu currently grows their population. Krimimimi (talk) 15:17, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • A great amount of renovation is taking place for the 2008 celebrations to mark the Century of the Monarchy in Bhutan. - is it finished now?
  • The statue will be finished in 2008. - was it? Draggleduck (talk) 11:03, 6 May 2010 (UTC) - I have visited today Thimphu and have been the Buddha statue. The statue itself is finished but construction work underneath it still continues for a monastery and a meditation retreat center. Both are expected to be finalized 2012. Krimimimi (talk) 15:17, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Currently new buildings are under construction to host a Supreme Court which is a new institution for Bhutan. So far, all matters went from local courts to the High Court and if needed for final resolution to the King. Update needed when the Supreme Court will get effective and whether the King will remain the final instance or is replaced by this. Krimimimi (talk) 15:17, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Also:

"Thimphu does not have a vibrant night life but the number of nightclubs and pool rooms for young people is growing quickly."

The source for this is a book published in 2006, so it needs an update as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Benevolent Prawn (talkcontribs) 04:45, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

GA

I am Nominating Thimphu for GA satatus I think it meets requirement. As one of the few active members of Wikiproject Bhutan I support the nomination. Spongie555 (talk) 04:55, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can you hold off for a little bit? Wait until Nvvchar comes back and then we can improve it to GA level. It won't pass GA right now. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:01, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ok i put it on hold for now do we know when he will come back? Spongie555 (talk) 21:26, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

☒N This is an impressive article which has had a lot of work put into it. However, it also has several issues that would need to be corrected. This article really needs a thorough copy-edit and perhaps a peer review. I have corrected a few sentences, but the problems remaining are too numerous to list. There are also a lot of problems with word choice, particularly editorializing and unattributed "peacock" and "weasel" words. I did enjoy reading the article and recognize all the effort that went into it, but unfortunately this article simply is not close enough for me to hold it. Issues

  • We need a pronunciation in the lead.
  • Several sentences are written awkwardly and could be improved. This article really needs a thorough copyedit.
    WP:COPYEDIT
  • There are a lot of problematic words and phrases throughout the article ("word choice" under GA requirement 1b). They should be replaced with neutral language and/or contained in an attributed quote. These words and phrases also cast the article's NPOV in doubt.
    WP:WEASEL

Seriously though Aaron, it could have been easily improved within the week, especially if two or three of us were copying editing. I strongly suggest you reopen this nomination as you haven't given us a chance to address what you think is problematic.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:31, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Incursion of Taba and Pamtsho

I know this article hasn’t been updated in a while, but Taba and Pamtsho have been considered as the part of the capital and both have had more urban development in recant years. Bhutaneseofbhutan (talk) 16:40, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Devolvation of executive powers to a council, who did it?

A sentence under the history section reads as follows:

"The fourth king, who had established the National Assembly in 1953, devolved all executive powers to a council of ministers elected by the people in 1998."

Assuming the fourth king referenced here is Jigme Singye, his reign was from 1972 to 2006. Is this a simple mix-up and the king who established the National Assembly was in fact the third king (Jigme Dorji) and the fourth king Jigme Singye was the one who devolved the council powers in 1998?
