You need an explanation of how the simple "ballistic" gauges work that depend on a pulse of air from the valve to push a marked scale partway along to indicate pressure. Perhaps this is talked about somewhere else, but since these are the very most common tire pressure gauges, it is strange that you don't seem to have any discussion. 141.156.16.135 (talk) 03:11, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's not really about tire pressure gauges, is it?

Following on from the comment above, very little in this article is about the gauges. It's actually about tire pressure more generally. I came here wondering how an old-fashioned ballistic gauge worked - and didn't find out. What I expected to find was a description/comparison of the different types of gauges (say, mechanical versus electronic, manual versus automatic). 45154james (talk) 09:56, 4 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Workbook notes for page improvement

Contributing to WikiProject Automobiles has been a long time coming. I'd love to move this article from stub-class to at least B-Class, but I'll settle for Start class as I build it out. Input is appreciated. Below is my workbook and outline for intended changes. I'll be editing on this outline before implementing the changes to the page. Project contributors are welcome to edit the rough outline as well:

Lead

  • Definition and uses: who uses them and in what settings, professionally and casually
  • Why tire pressure gauges are notable: part of basic vehicle operator's arsenal? Other ideas welcome.
  • Commonly used tire pressure gauges: stick-type, dial, and digital
  • High-level view of how tire pressure gauges operate and when they're needed

History

  • First development of tire-pressure gauges and vehicles maintained with them
  • Advancement of gauges: introduction of more technologically-advanced gauges
  • Introduction of tire pressure warning on vehicle display
  • Modern uses of tire-pressure gauges and options available on-market

Usage

  • Owner operators' use for all wheeled vehicles and using gauges in tandem with air compressors and pumps for all inflated items (air mattresses, strollers, paddle boards, etc.)
  • Professional use: Mechanics' gauges and how they use gauges to identify tire malfunctions, issues, and improve gas mileage
  • Competitive use: NASCAR and racing (pit crews), Olympics (bicycling), etc.

Types of Gauges

  • Stick-type
  • Dial
  • Digital
