The Toyota Echo has not much in common with the "Belta". "Toyota Echo" should redirect to the Yaris page, as the Echo is a Yaris with a trunk, basically.

I know, I own one, saw Yaris in Europe up close, they are the same exact cars, except for the rear end.

Incidently, the US sales number should be carried over the Yaris page.

I don't think it is appropriate to put both Toyota Platz and Toyota Belta on the same page and say that they are the same model. However, the Toyota Belta can be interpreted as the successor to the Platz since it was introduced after the discontinuation of the Platz. Also, there are two generations of the Platz (first generation: 1999-2002, second generation: 2003-2005) with distinctly different exterior styling. The Belta is yet another new design. For consistency, I suggest refering the vehicle with the same name throughout the article because the names Echo and Yaris refer to different models (Platz, Vitz, or Belta) in worldwide markets.

Most long articles of automobile models are split by generation rather than by market, unless they are very different (which is not the case here). I think there should be two articles on these models, one for the first generation and another for the second generation. Both articles should deal with sedan and hatchback versions, plus the Yaris Verso, which is a mini MPV, for the first generation. -- NaBUru38 19:09, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WhiteEcho, US Yaris IS Belta, just as US Echo was exactly the Platz with LHD. And yes, US Yaris is european Yaris with a trunk, exactly as Belta is a Vitz with a trunk.

If you don't believe - then just look at their frame codes: - 1st gen is CP10/CP13/CP15 for hatches, CP11/CP12/CP16 for sedans; - 2nd gen is CP90/CP91/CP95 for hatches, CP92/CP96 for sedans. Bolkhov 08:46, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

And regarding "two generations of the Platz" -- there was only ONE generation 1999-2004, with a facelift in 2002. Belta is not a "new design", it is just a successor to Platz and can be thought about as "2nd gen Platz" (the name was changed due to marketoidal reasons only).

To clarify the situation, below is a quick summary of all CP platform vehicles

1st generation:

• Hatch: CP10, JP: Vitz; EU: Yaris; CA: Echo
• Sedan: CP10, JP: Platz; US: Echo
• MPV: CP20, JP: FunCargo; EU: Yaris Verso

2nd generation:

• Hatch: CP90, JP: Vitz; EU: Yaris
• Sedan: CP90, JP: Belta; US: Yaris
• MPV: CP100, JP: Ractis; in EU the 1st gen Yaris Verso was still offered

Various vehicles based on 1st generation (some are still in production):

• CP19: Will Vi
• CP30: bB (JP), Scion xB (US)
• CP40: Vios/Soluna Vios (sedan for South-East Asia)
• CP50: Probox/Succeed
• CP60: Ist (JP), Scion xA (US)
• CP70: Will Cypha

Toyota's system of frame code numbering makes relations obvious.

Some notes:

• The "CP90" designation should have been better noted as "[C,S]P9x", but this only complicates things and isn't really needed.

• In fact, the "CP" platform can have "SP" frame code - it depends on the engine: for Z-suffixed engines (NZ, SZ) the second letter is "C" (e.g., NCP10), for R-suffixed engine (KR, ZR) the second letter would be "S". That's Toyota's naming system - while a bit complicated, it is perfectly "algorythmizable". (A similar trick with diesel engines - second letter becomes "L" (e.g., NLP90).)

This car has three names for different regions:

• Belta for Japan
• Vios for South East Asia
• Yaris for the rest of the world
