An incredible musician, with an more incredible education concerning the musical styles, he turned from industrial rock to almost classic sounding stuff - something nobody can explain, and lately he did something i might call "film score influented" - if he is ok with it, I mean Trent himself ! :-)

He started out in classical music..

Did Trent make "at the heart of it all" ?.. im pretty sure aphex twin made the beats etc.

"At the Heart of It All" Its credited to Aphex Twin, it appears on his "...remixes for cash" disc. Along with "The Beauty of Being Numb".

On 18 October 2004 Trent said he had left Nothing records, does this mean he'll no longer be releasing albums with that label? If so, the main entry should be updated. I guess we might have to wait until With Teeth's release to be sure.

I noticed the picture of Reznor was taken down due to copyright issues. Although I understand the purpose, does it really matter if he cares whether or not its used in this context?

This article isn't in terribly great shape at the moment. I'm working on a major overhaul. It'll include information on Reznor's childhood, pre-NIN work, and his work outside of NIN. Basically, I think this article should be about everything Reznor, except for much about NIN. That info belongs in the main NIN article.

I've begun by adding the remixes section. I've strictly split up the remixes between this article and the NIN article, depending on which name Reznor used in the album credits. A lot of them I don't own, so I based the split on the Reznor Discogs and NIN Discogs entries.

Is Trent Reznor a reference to Trevor Reznik, the protagonist of the movie The Machinist, or is that name just coincidence? (clem 22:23, 13 May 2005 (UTC))

There is idle speculation in the NIN fan communities that the Machinist character may be a reference to Reznor, but there is no information to confirm or deny that idea. Rynne 17:16, 10 August 2005 (UTC)

i would say it's more than idle speculation, the book the film was based on is prefaced with quotes from "the downward spiral"... (HoS)

I've tried to fix some of the Reznor/NIN distinctions. First, I expanded the Quake part under Other Work with the material from Nine Inch Nails, because Reznor is credited for it (despite the NIN tributes).

Then in re-formatting that section I discovered all the other entries bar one are in fact credited to NIN so I removed all but the lost highway ones (which, since one is credited to Reznor, are of relevance).

I am about to research and determine whether the doom3 stuff in the NIN article belongs here instead.

I'm pretty sure Reznor knew he was living in the Tate mansion--he calls the studio "le pig" in the Downward Spiral liner notes, and mentions in a recent interview that "It was cool when you had a party because everyone in the world wanted to come." An older interview mentions that he wasn't aware of the home's history at the time of purchase, though. -- Wapcaplet 20:40, 4 October 2005 (UTC)

Didn't Trent sing at least backing vocals on 1 of the Prick songs? I'm at work and don't have the cd in front of me, but I'm pretty sure he did.

So I found my CD. The song I was thinking of was "Other People" I would have sworn that Trent sang the "Other People" in the chorus and was credited as such. It sure sounds like it's Trent to me, but without any proper documentation....

He's not officially credited in the album notes, but to quote the old NIN faq:

In the December 1996 issue of Keyboard magazine, an interview with Trent mentioned that (to paraphrase him) "most of the backing vocals on the Prick album were me screaming from across the room". These tracks he refers to are the ones that he engineered and were apparently recorded in his bedroom during the Broken sessions. BotleySmith 18:47, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

I just read in the bio it mentioned that Trent was engaged to someone named Denise Milfort, just curiose who is this exactly? Also i haven't seen anything in the news that indicated he was even in a realtionship. Just wondering if who ever posted that could give a little more information, and source where they got the information.THANKS!

And if this is indeed true, I must say I am truly heartbroken :(

• Thanks for pointing that out. That shouldn't be in the article. Denise Milfort is the vocalist on "La Mer" from The Fragile. I've never heard anything that would ever indicate that there was a realationship, let alone an engagement between her and Reznor. Does this article need such a lot of trivia entries? I believe some could be incorporated into the article, and others dispensed with. I mean, who cares how tall he is? The Trivia section should have a few noteworthy elements, say three to eight at most. Fatfingers 02:26, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

While I quite like the trivia bits, is 'has no tattoos' really that interesting? Whats the point in stating what he doesn't have? You might as well add... 'doesn't have blonde hair, 'Doesn't have a pet horse named peacock.'

Does anyone have material on the fake webpage that was up years ago (I can't remember its name for the life of me)? I wouldn't normally suggest adding a parody page to a Wikipedia article, but I think it ended up being used in some news stories about what he was doing, planning on doing, etc. I think it's at least as trivia-worthy as Reese's cups. Maybe?

I couldn't find a good reference for bipolar disorder, and I found this one that says he doesn't have it.

--If you read that article correctly, Trent says that the doctor told him he has an emotional disorder (bipolar disorder), except he only experiences the extreme lows of bipolar disorder without the extreme highs. So it says that Trent has bipolar disorder, but in a worse-than-normal way. With all due respect to one's personal life, I still think we could include a section or more background on the impact of his drug and alcohol use on his music. I'll include some resources and some sections for other sites to use (I would add a section myself, but I am not the best writer and unsure about properly citing my work).

"Not now,” Trent responds quickly, breaking the lethargic pace at which he usually speaks. “There certainly was a time – the mid ‘90s when we blew up commercially – strange things happen to you. You can say as I did, ‘that won’t affect me.’ But when almost every aspect of your life changes from your bank account, to your friends, to everyone around you, to everyone kissing your arse, to the phone ringing off the hook… and it happening against the backdrop of being on a tour bus away from whatever you thought home was, without any kind of sense of who you are – which is where I was at the time – and you read press about yourself, which makes you out to be something you never really thought you were… I saw my personality distort. I started thinking I had to live up to that image and if I met people and I wasn’t the most depressed vampire in the world then I would let people down. It became a self fulfilling prophecy.

“I kinda based who I was on what I’d read about myself. Set that against a healthy dose of alcohol and drugs and it’s a recipe for disaster. These days it feels like I learned a lesson. I’d subscribed to the romantic artist belief that my art comes from pain and that I have to be fucked up for inspiration. I believed I did need these things for a while. I’ve learned with a clear mind that I’m capable of a lot more than I was; certainly at the end of my rung. And that’s inspiring to me at the moment.”

Trent has very publicly battled with depression for much of his life. Part of it self-inflicted, an almost psychosomatic repercussion from his constant portrayal as the ever-morose, cocaine and bondage version of Depeche Mode. His voice still shows scars of this. As the sole face of NIN he’s left to do everything: the music, the interviews, the videos, the business side of things, everything. He’s tired and monotonous throughout. But really, all these goths go to bed dreaming of cuddly-wuddly bunny wabbits, rainbows and chocolate. He certainly does following his creation of new album Year Zero.

As a result of Reznor’s new found sobriety, he discovered there were more hours in the day – time that needs to be filled where previously he would use it to ply nose candy into his hooter, bathe in champagne and screw groupies to the floorboards. Well… maybe he still does groupies. I would. And with time to fill, and the advancement of the portable recording studio he wrote an album’s worth of material on NIN’s last tour in support of 2005’s With Teeth." [2]

Unfortunately, after some searching I was unable to pull up a great interview I'd read a couple years back regarding his drug use and music.

While I wouldn't be surprised that Trent had/has this, I'm wondering what are the sources for this? Did someone extrapolate to this conclusion or is it actually mentioned somewhere by Reznor? Is there any definitive information on Trent Reznor's religous beliefs? Trent sang backup vocals on Tori's song "Past the Mission", recorded in 1993, released 1994, that whole year there was speculation they were a couple. Her reference to Pretty Hate Machine in "Caught a Lite Sneeze", she has said, was an improve, and she meant it as a reference to when she was driving around listening to really heavy rock music as a single woman in L.A. in the 80s. At that time 1995, she was in dire straits, having just ended a long relationship with Eric Rosse. In the original Japanese version, the creatures were called Bui-Bui. The name was changed in the English version. So it's still entirely possible that whoever was adapting the game for English-speaking players decided to name them after Trent. I mean, one of the Koopa Kids is named after Wendy O. Hopefully this new photo I uploaded will do the trick. I think it's excellent quality (if I do say so myself) and is Reznor without question in 2009 in concert. Please leave the caption as it is. I live in Akron, Ohio, and I know there was a time, particularly around 1990-1991 where he lived here in Akron, not Cleveland. I know it was supposed to be in a house on Thornton St., but I don't think that was ever verified. I see a reference to him moving to Cleveland, but it never mentions his time in Akron. I think it's important, because it was during the time when his first album was released, and also when he was involved in doing some comic-book artwork. I just checked back, and found there was never any reference to his artwork at all. I don't know how much there was of it, or who he did work for, but I was told by friends who had seen some of it that it was very good. They were "released/leaked(?)" via Pirate Bay by the seed0 user who first uploaded the Closure DVD. This Closure DVD "release/leak" made its way into the Closure article (as did as the seed0 user). I don't know I really see your point. Agreed that Trent doesn't belong in the PETA category (if there's ever one made for people who've made videos for PETA, that's different), but I do see that the information about his video has been removed (as "minor importance", evidently). Since it was sourced by a copyvio video, I've salvaged the text from prior to its removal in November 2009 and added two sources for it that aren't copyvios:

Reznor has also worked to further animal welfare. He narrated a video for PETA, describing the cat and dog fur trade in China and urging viewers to avoid fur clothing.^[1][2]

I considered placing banners or comments in the text but this is less messy. There are obvious issues needing attention. Example: mentioning in the lead that Reznor "plans to do (whatever..) this year with (whoever..)" isn't proper given that it is speculative without whatever event actually taking place. And, most editors are not dedicated enough to check their watchlist two years later to see if what Reznor planned did happen and reference it. Also, there's a bunch of references needed for the majority of claims made in the biography. Finally, I replaced the "posed" photo with a real concert photo that is more up to date; both are encouraged more. Shouldn't he be pictured in more of a neutral position? Sure it represents the heavier side of his music, but I don't think the majority of his songs can be classified as heavy metal - especially his latest four albums, so you could say it's kind of misleading. For what it's worth I am not "some people", I am only one, and despite your attempt at mind-reading I did not think it was an insult. As I explained in my original edit summary, your prose did not reflect the source material. While I appreciate your attempt to remedy this I still feel that you are over-egging the pudding somewhat. In the same way that I do not constitute "some people", a single article written in 2010 that used the phrase "one-trick pony" in a complimentary way does not mean that "Some critics have been calling Reznor a one-trick-pony for at least a decade around 2000."

Moreover, the rest of the paragraph, "..which was a pretty darn good trick that made his music worked so well with the subject matter Reznor dealt with in his NIN projects", is poorly written and presents your personal interpretation of a source in Wikipedia's voice. Basically, you've made it sound like Trent Reznor has been criticized for many years, but Wikipedia thinks he's "pretty darn good". And if you were to reword it more properly you'd end up stating the simple fact that one reviewer once said something, which is hardly the kind of content worthy of the lead section, so I can only recommend that someone please remove it as I don't wish to get into an edit war if I'm alone in my opinions. To add on to my reversion summary: criticism does not belong in the header unless it's a near-universal consensus by critics and the general public. Reznor's output since 2000 (both with NIN and solo) has been received positively and does not point to him as being a "one trick pony" whatsoever.

According to Reznor, in a 2015 YouTube interview for Moog: "The first synth I ever got - that was the greatest day of my life, at the time - was the Moog Prodigy. [...] That was really the huge turning-point, you know. I knew that thing inside and out and it was - it just felt musical."

I couldn't think of how to add it, but it seems to belong to his "early life" section. The reason I couldn't figure out where to put it is that I don't know exactly where it falls, chronologically. If he's being sincere and not just saying that to get a free Moog, then it seems important material to me.

i can't comment on the debate over the better photo to use, but yet again wikipedia has made the decision to put a microphone in front of the subject's face -- what is this thing it has with microphones? can anyone actually say, "yeah, that's what trent looks like!" can you even tell what he looks like? could you look at that picture and then pick him out of a police lineup? seriously, is there a wikipedia policy that requires unrecognizable, uninterpretable, botched, blocked, or otherwise useless portrait photos of its biographical subjects? this policy should be written out so that it can be challenged by the readers. Simply put, linking to the agent's site adds no biographical information to the article. Plus, it's a primary source, something Wikipedia frowns upon. I am not accusing you of advertising for the agency, I apologize if that's how it came across. However, in my opinion, the link is effectively advertising for his agency, not providing any actual "value" to the reader. At best, if you found a link discussing his agent & the work that agent did for Reznor, that would be of interest here. We're not here to "add value" to the article. If anything is of encyclopedic relevance to the reader should be included in the article, not simply "Hey, here's a link to his agent's site." Current activities are not encyclopedic content.

Primary sources can be used as a reference for material in the article, not simply linked for the heck of it. If you're not finding anything on the site that needs to be included in the article, the link is not relevant.

The strict Wikipedia based principle for not including this (beyond the above) is covered by

WP:ELMIN

Perhaps I'm missing something, but why do two of the categories at the bottom of the entry refer to Reznor as someone "from Louisiana"? I note that the body of the entry itself makes no mention of Louisiana -- again, unless I'm missing something.

I now see that Reznor moved to New Orleans as an adult for about 9 years as an adult. I'm unsure that makes him "from Louisiana" but leave it to others to determine.
