I'm wondering what the reasoning is for putting it in the SNL article. SNL parodies just about anything and everything in pop culture, so how would the inclusion of a "We Are the World 25" parody stand out in that article, i.e. how would it be notable in that context? Does that particular episode have its own page? If so, then I can understand mentioning the skit there, but to my knowledge, there are no Wikipedia articles for individual SNL episodes. I hate to be wishy-washy but I have no real preference for its inclusion or non-inclusion, but *if* consensus is to include the SNL skit, then I believe this article is the more appropriate place for it, as the skit is a parody of this song. - eo (talk) 12:50, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Since this conversation began in March and is ongoing without generating much involvement, I will go ahead and do a WP:RfC on it to hopefully get it finally settled. Should a parody of a song be included as part of the criticism for that song?

After reading the many arguments, I think SNL's status as a decades-old pop-barometer may warrant some mention in this article, especially because of the press, including RollingStone.com, that this particular SNL episode has received (citations are now archived). However, on general principle, article content should be carefully limited to how the SNL episode relates to (critiques) the subject WATW25Haiti song and video. The SNL critique might warrant a sentence like any other critique already described in first two paragraphs in the "Critical Reviews..." section). Perhaps the sentence should quote or paraphrase what is actually said in the best secondary source(s). (In contrast, mentioning Jennifer Lopez and the SNL crew doesn't really add to the substantive content of the critique, and I think mention of Lopez/SNLcrew should be omitted.) Buotros, I am sorry if I made the question to succint. Considering the discussion beforehand I thought it would be plain that we are talking about including the mention of the parody and not the parody itself. I would also agree with RCraig that including a simple mention in the critical comments section that SNL parodied the song to indicate what they thought of the song (quotes/staff comments/etc) would suffice. I agree with Gaussian and RCraig: a simple, focused mention would suffice. The parody speaks for itself. SNL is a 35-year-old television show, and, as RCraig wrote, a pop-barometer. The information is not "trivial" or "irrelevant". If we accept that reasoning, thousands of articles here should be revised, because usually they contain a section titled "In popular culture", about references, portrayals of the subject in popular media, and, of course, parodies.

To mention Jennifer Lopez identifies the episode, but that can be arranged. Here's the information, maybe someone could summarize it:

On February 27, 2010, the video and song were parodied as "We Are The World 3:Raising Awareness Of The We Are the World 2 Disaster", during the opening of a Saturday Night Live episode hosted by Jennifer Lopez (

To clarify my opinion: the referenced critique of WatW25Haiti should be included, but the particular players (Lopez/Rihanna/Stafani etc) be excluded. I agree, it is not trivial or irrelevant. I propose the following text since it quotes a reliable source:

Rolling Stone said its readers "mostly agreed" with the assessment of a February 27, 2010 Saturday Night Live parody: "Recently, the music world came together to record 'We Are the World 2,' a song to raise awareness of the Haiti earthquake disaster; sadly, the song itself was a disaster," with a Quincy Jones impersonator dubbing the parody "We Are the World 3: Raising Awareness of the 'We Are the World 2' Disaster."
