Pronunciation

Some guidance on the pronunciation of "Wilmslow" would be useful. Is it generally pronounced as "Wims low" or "Wilms low"? Richerman (talk) 14:12, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a difference? I'm from down the road, and I don't think there's a set rule. I'd say Wilm-s-low. It's neither Wilm-slow nor Wilms-low... it sorts of blurs into one sound. KillerKat (talk) 21:13, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to reopen this old chestnut- but I was drawn here by a dinner table conversation. I believe it was my grandfather who explained that 'When asked where they came from, people would say Wimslow- only to be corrected, oh you mean wilms-low by the questioner who had seen it on a map'. I think that was told to enfuriate his wife and the side of the family who used Wilm-s-low. By my day it was a class divide- wimslow (working class) wilmslow (aspirant upper class) and then students came to Manchester, and they had seen Wilmslow Road on the map sent out by accomodation. So gentrification played its rôle. This is a difficult one because WP always relies on written sources-it has got to be said that a true native cannot hear the difference between wimslow- and wilms-low, so does not challenge 'estate agent speak'. But could we please acknowledge in the lead that the two forms have currency. ClemRutter (talk) 19:46, 20 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The Notable Residents section

This section contains entries of poor quality at the moment, because they have no citations which verify the claim that the people are notable residents of Wilmslow. Many have been tagged as requiring verification for a while. The advice given in

WP:UKCITIES
as a guide). Note that a wikilink to an article which may or may not contain appropriate verification and citation is not sufficient: the actual verification and citation must occur in this article for the entry to be retained in this article. Finally, I think we should be alert to requiring new entries to have the appropriate verification at the point of entry, or else suffer from removal here or deletion immediately they are seen.

Alan Turing I have seen no evidence at all that Alan Turing lived in Wilmslow at any point in his life; the reference given has no mention of Wilmslow. Can someone provide some, or just delete this section.

If evidence has not been provided for a statement, we should only delete it if it's contentious. For other cases, we should add this [citation needed] template, just like that. Then, other editors can search for - and add - substantiation. As for Turing having lived in Wilmslow, well his WP article contains this photo: Trafford09 (talk) 12:02, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Landmarks and Tourist Attractions

I see that there's a photograph of St Bartholemew's but nothing about it, so I've now added a bit under a new heading of Religion. Perhaps someone could do likewise with regard to schools, under a heading of "Education". I'm not sure if they're landmarks, and they're not really tourist attractions. Village or town

I'm not too sure of the difference between these, but an editor has just changed all 'town' to 'village', in this article alone.

I wonder which is more correct, or more common:

Colshaw Farm

... although Colshaw Farm, Wilmslow's thorn-in-its side famous run-down council estate, is hardly ever recorded within these capitalistic, quasi self effacing pseudo-figures.

I don't know anything about Colshaw Farm so I cannot comment on how accurate this is, but could it be phrased in a way that doesn't sound so much like a political commentary? Jrmh (talk) 23:28, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
