Reserve Squadrons
Can someone please take a look at the official SAAF website [1] (section header " A New Approach"). Does this mean that all previous reserve squadrons are now disbanded and currently there is only an amorphous AFR Inactive Structure (the Pool)? How does this impact the template? I believe that paragraph refers to The Air Force Conventional Reserve, whose members serve in active SAAF units when called up. The reserve squadrons are part of the Air Force Territorial Reserve and were previously Air Commando Squadrons and then Air Volunteer Squadrons before being named Air Force Reserve Squadrons. Whatever the case, I can confirm that the Air Force Reserve Squadrons remain active. --
Website says "Members of the AFR would have to be handpicked experts.. with diverse aviation expertise...The AFR provides the capability to expand the SAAF timeously for as long or short a period as is deemed necessary...... Between ...assignments members reside in the AFR Inactive Structure (the Pool)."
To me - this includes pilots - who are now grouped in the "AFR Inactive Structure" - and not in squadrons! Is there any other source which confirms the squadrons still exist? Read in context, the official; website refers to the reserve squadrons - but goes on to explain that there have been political reasons for making changes. Aha.... Impi, you are correct. Reserve Squadrons are now called Air Force Territorial Reserve - refer further down in the same article on the official website page. However, 103, 112 and 114 Sqn's appear to have been disbanded lately. 109 was disbanded in 1993. Template updated. Farawayman (talk) 19:07, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
