I'm not sure about some of the characters we currently have in the links template. I think it's been up to individual editors who went in so far so I'm hoping to start some discussion here to build a consensus.

Currently the police section includes McNulty, Greggs, Daniels, Freamon, Carver and Hauk. I would like to see Bunk in there. He's been a starring character for longer than Freamon, Carver and Hauk. Rawls and Burrell probably should also be included. I thought maybe dividing the police up into officers and investigators would give enough room to achieve this.

The street section includes Wee-Bey, who is only a guest starring character. Perhaps D'Angelo and/or Cutty should be in there.

In the docks section I would swap Serge for Beadie as she was a starring character.

Politics seems Ok for now but Norman Wilson is a starring character so I'm interested to see whether he develops to become more significant than other characters, Phelan for example. --Opark 77 19:59, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bubbles is pretty noticeable in his absence. Bunk, Rawls, and Burrell, I agree, definitely need to be there. Perhaps we don't necessarily need rows of equal length?

Also, I think the rows should be of different colored backgrounds, or at least alternating light-colored/white, to make it easier to see who fits in which group. I will go see if there is a character template somewhere that I really like, which we could emulate. Andrew Levine 23:05, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Personally I think D'Angelo is more noticeable in his absence of The Street, even though he is dead. In the first season he was the main character of the street to McNulty's main character of the police. then again we could always use a smaller font but more comprehensive template that includes all the separate facets of the police, law, street and politics. –– Lid^(Talk) 02:05, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone else think there should be a section added focusing on The School? It is one of the major categories on HBO's character website. [1]. Perhaps it could include the four core students, as well as maybe Prez and Colvin. Of course, the students should probably get their own character pages first. I like the addition of the school section. In response to earlier discussion. I think Bubbles and D'Angelo both deserve a place. Certainly more than Wee-Bey, Phelan or Marla Daniels do. I think an alternating colour scheme would be helpful.

I've restored "Politics" and "Journalists". Politics is the sections header for the plot summary on every episode guide and the show's politician characters include those at state level so "city hall" is not really appropriate. The journalists header is a link to the Journalists of The Wire article and is therefore consistent with the useage elsewher. It just seemed odd to me that some of the section titles, like school, streets, and docks, referred to places, while the ones I edited referred to groups of people. I was also trying to make it a bit more like the "cast and crew" section on HBO's website[2], which sorts the characters by The Law, The Street, The Paper, The Hall, The Port, and The School. thebogusman (talk) 22:26, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The HBO wensite categories are a lot narrower than what we use on wikipedia. I think necessarily so because we cover far more of the ensemble than the HBO website. We don't use the law because we now have 3 subdivisions for that section - Police, Command and Courthouse. We don't use the Port because we use the docks instead on most of the coverage here. We do use the school and we do use the street although we have additional sections for drug dealers, and kingpins. I think the hall is an oversimplification as stated. I just think its more important that we cater to a reader unfamiliar with the series than that we pattern ourselves after the HBO website.--Opark 77 (talk) 10:41, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I understand that many of the HBO categories have become to too broad to adequately differentiate among all the characters introduced in five seasons. I just feel like there should be more consistency w/r/t word usage in the section titles; as they are now they look awkward (maybe it's just me). thebogusman (talk) 20:12, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps it isn't the categories themselves that feel forced, but the uniform number of names in each category where it doesn't make sense.
