The Ridge is a wallet and everyday carry product manufacturer specializing in minimalist RFID wallets. The Ridge was founded in 2013 by father-son duo Daniel and Paul Kane.[1] The company initially relied on crowdfunding campaigns to finance the manufacturing of their products.[2] The company's wallet patent has been the subject of litigation starting in 2020.[3]

The Ridge was established in 2013 by Daniel and Paul Kane, who launched a Kickstarter campaign for the Ridge Wallet as their flagship product.[4] The campaign gained significant popularity and met its initial funding goal.[5] The company has since expanded its product line to include rings, backpacks, and other accessories, along with new, upgraded versions of its original wallet.[6] In 2019, Ridge was featured on Inc's 5000 Fastest Growing Companies.[7] Marques Brownlee, a famous YouTube personality, joined Ridge on its board of directors and as a "chief creative partner" in early 2024. Brownlee received an undisclosed stake in the company. [8]

Products

The company's primary product is a slim, minimalist wallet made from materials such as aluminum, titanium, and carbon fiber. It features technology to prevent electronic pickpocketing and RFID skimming.[9] The Ridge Wallet has consistently been featured in various best of lists, including "Best Minimalist Wallet for 2023" by CNET[10] and "20 Best Wallets for Men 2023" by Men's Health.[11] The company has embraced its "friendly" association with everyday carry culture and produces “weatherproof bags, leather phone cases, and compact knives.”[5] In 2021, the company introduced customization options to its products[6] and, in 2023, began selling luggage.[12]

Litigation

The Ridge is currently the plaintiff in three separate district court patent litigations and one patent and trade dress litigation in the International Trade Commission. Ridge accuses defendant Mosaic Brands, Inc. (doing business as Storus) of patent infringement in the District Court for the Central District of California.[13] The lawsuit is the result of Ridge's counterclaim of patent infringement in a litigation originally brought by Mosaic. While Mosaic's suit was dismissed with prejudice,[14] Ridge's suit continues following a successful reversal of a prior invalidity finding by the Federal Circuit.[15] Ridge has also accused Mountain Voyage Company in the District Court of Colorado and Bemmo, Inc. in the Eastern District of New York of infringing its patent.[16][17] In addition, Ridge sued several defendants of infringing on its patent and Ridge's trade dress in the International Trade Commission.[18]
