Located at the center of the county, it borders the following townships:

The entire township lies in the Virginia Military District.

The city of Wilmington, the county seat of Clinton County, is located in central Union Township.

Name and history

Union Township was established in 1813. It was so named because it was formed from a "union" of land given by Chester, Richland, and Vernon townships.[4]

It is one of twenty-seven Union Townships statewide.[5]

Transportation

3C Highway (State Route 3 and U.S. Route 22), U.S. Route 68, and State Routes 73 and 134

Airborne Airpark
and is located just east of Wilmington in the township.

Government

The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township fiscal officer,[6] who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the fiscal officership or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees.
