American rapper Playboi Carti is scheduled to release his upcoming third studio album sometime in 2024, through Interscope Records, AWGE and Opium. The album's title has not yet been confirmed, but several tentative titles, including Narcissist, Antagonist, Music, and I Am Music, have been teased at various points throughout the project's development. The album will serve as a follow-up to his second studio album Whole Lotta Red (2020).

Background and promotion

The first mention of a new album dates back to March 10, 2021. After releasing his highly-anticipated second studio album Whole Lotta Red three months prior, Carti took to Instagram to announce a new project, saying:[1]

LeTs dr0p thiS new Album . w3 noT done [sic]. (Let's drop this new album. We not done.)

On August 23, Carti announced the album's initial title, Narcissist, and a release date of September 13,[2] although the date wasn't met. On September 1, the Narcissist Tour (later renamed to the King Vamp Tour[3]) was announced.[4] In an April 2022 interview with XXL, Carti revealed that the album's title had been changed to Music.[5] On December 25, the second anniversary of Whole Lotta Red's release,[6] Carti returned to social media, posting what seemed to be cover art to Instagram and tweeting "love all my supporters it's time", hinting at a possible new release.[7]

On February 21, 2023, DJ Swamp Izzo suggested on the Voices in the Streets Unfiltered podcast that the album was near completion.[8] On March 3, Carti kicked off day one of Rolling Loud California. During the set, he performed the unreleased track "Rockstar", which is expected to be included on his upcoming album.[9] During his headliner performance at Wireless Festival on July 7, Carti previewed the song "Pop Out", which is also expected to appear on the album.[10] On July 28, Carti again teased the album on Instagram after being featured on the track "Fe!n" from Travis Scott's fourth studio album Utopia, stating "New shit on the way, believe that".[11]

On September 1, a rumored potential lead single, "Killers", was leaked online.[12] The song was first previewed during Carti's previously mentioned April 2022 interview with XXL, alongside other new tracks for the album.[5] On September 13, during Carti's 28th birthday party in Atlanta, four unreleased tracks that are speculated to be on the album were previewed; the songs appear to feature American rappers Travis Scott and Lil Uzi Vert.[13] On October 18, V Magazine noted during an interview with Ken Carson that Carti reportedly plans to release his album in 2024.[14] In a November 2023 interview with German magazine Numéro Berlin, Carti was asked about the album, to which he responded:[15]

It's very important to me, because I feel like I have something to prove. I'm just excited, you know? This is my moment, this is the one for me.

Carti also revealed that he recorded the album in a cave recording studio in Paris for three months.[15] After Carti postponed the European leg of his upcoming Antagonist Tour,[16] American media personality DJ Akademiks shared a press release reassuring fans that the album was still "coming soon".[17]

On December 7, Carti posted "I am music" to his Instagram story.[18] This was followed by another story which showed a tweet from Pharrell Williams in response to Carti's original post, with Williams writing only the word "Prepare". That same day, DJ Akademiks shared that Carti is scheduled to release his album in January 2024, saying that it "will be the greatest thing you ever heard".[19] On December 8, Carti continued to post images featuring cryptic messages, such as "Im [sic] not playing" and "2024", to his Instagram story while also previewing unreleased music alongside them.[20] Later that evening, he released the song "Different Day" via the Opium Instagram account, accompanied by a full-length music video; the song did not receive an official streaming release.[21] He would also release another promotional single on December 14, titled "2024" and released along another music video on YouTube.[22][23][24][25] On December 19, he released the third promotional single "H00dByAir", alongside another music video, exclusively on Instagram.[26][27][28][29][30] On January 1, Playboi Carti's backup dancer and experimental musician, Blackhaine would announce on Carti's Instagram story that he would be releasing a song that day, alongside an image showcasing the time of its release. That same day, Carti would go on to release his fourth promotional single, "Backr00ms" featuring Travis Scott, which again would be exclusively available on YouTube.[31][32][33][34][35] On January 15, he released the fifth promotional single "EvilJ0rdan", alongside another music video exclusively on Instagram.[36] On March 12, he released the sixth promotional single "Ketamine", alongside yet another music video exclusively on Instagram.[37][38][39]

Title

Playboi Carti has provided several tentative titles for the album, the first being hinted over Twitter with the name Narcissist[2] after posting a screenshot of an iMessage groupchat, stating to: "Forget about sample clearances . Drop Narcissist".[40] Following the statement, the Narcissist tour, which would later be renamed to the King Vamp Tour.[3] was announced on September 1, 2021.

Additionally, fans have speculated Antagonist, the name for the upcoming world tour with Ken Carson, Destroy Lonely, and Homixide Gang, could also be a title for the album.[41][42][43][44][45]

In an April 2022 interview with XXL, Carti revealed another title for the album, Music, and stated "that's all it is at this point".[46][5]

Since December 2023, Carti has been teasing the title I Am Music and Music.[21]
