Sunaini Sharma, an Ethnomusicologist born on 29th January, 1971 takes pride and feels blessed to be the eldest born to Dolly Guleria and Col. S.S. Guleria. Being the eldest grandchild of the legendary folk singer, Surinder Kaur; also popularly known as the ‘Nightangle of Punjab’; Sunaini as she is fondly addressed, was raised in a musical environment in her growing up years.

Early Life

In 1977, she formally became the disciple/shagird of Khan Sahib, Abdul Rehman Khan of Patiala gharana who was the Ustad to her grandmother Surinder Kaur and her mother Dolly Guleria as well. The first bandish she learnt from him “Ni mein laa akhiyan pachtai” in raag ‘Charukhesi’ was greatly appreciated by all in the family and everyone encouraged her to learn with full devotion and dedication.


In 1993 she travelled with her grandmother and mother on a tour of U.K. and performed LIVE with them on stage, professionally for the first time. The Musical Album “Surinder Kaur The Three Generations” was launched the same year in London and was greatly appreciated.

Subsequent performances in India,

Nusrat Fateh Ali came true, when she and her grandmother were invited to witness the concert at the Royal Albert Hall
in London during a trip to the U.K. for a private event.

Sunaini’s love for

Sufi music became deeper and her research and study of the subject became more intense; around the same time her mother Dolly Guleria had composed two albums with 12 tracks of the great works of Sufi poets and Sunaini had the privilege of shooting the videos in the capacity of a Creative Director and Editor to launch the home production under the banner of Do Re Me Creations
