Origin and signification of the surname Mitterrand
According to François Mitterrand, the family legend poetically tells that :
Mitterrand
is a surname originating from the berrichon dialect which means « milieu des terres »[1] (" middle of the earth"). The legend allso states that Mitterrand would actually derive from mitier, which comes from the old french and is a sort of grain measurement. In reality, a mitterrand would have designed a measurer, someone responsible for making measurements[2]. The word mitier (and also Mitterand according to this hypothesis) relates to the Indo-European root *mēti- : " measure, mental combination ", which is found in the Greek words metis, " caution, cunning ", metron, " measure " (who gave meter in English), and in Latin words metiri : " to measure ", mensura : " measure ", immensus : " unmeasurable, immense ".
It is also possible that the surname came from métayer, from mi-terre, or " the one who works the land halfway through ". It is worth noting the existence of the spelling variants Miteran, Miterrand, and Mitterand, just like the hamlet of Mitterand in Allogny in the Cher.
This surname is quite rare. It is present in only about twenty municipalities in France.[3]. It seems to be mainly used in the Cher (the cradle seems to be the commune of Vignoux-sous-les-Aix), and can be alos found in the Nièvre[réf. nécessaire]. Catégorie:Article à référence nécessaire
