Anything to do?

Hey! Vensatry is not reflecting back on the flc nor Indopug. I guess if you can't help then why Coming to give your opinions? I hope both of them will reflect back.—

Vensatry from my experience of him is a very good reviewer and finds many issues worth addressing, but in this instance my perception of the situation is that he's unlikely to ever change his opinion however good the list is, sorry Vens.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:04, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

Well, no second opinion is that Vensatry is a good reviewer. Intact, he has written good articles and is an outstanding writer. But, I don't know why he is behaving like this because in other Bollywood FAs (such as Zinta, Balan, Kapoor) they don't mention in their filmography section about those appearances but still they passed FA. I want to know that why there there where no oppose to them? If one is adding television their articles should also include this. No? I mean it's tiring. I only hope he understands and help us.—

Me again, harping on the same old theme

I was kind of surprised when I saw all the encyclopedias available on commons at [1], and also, honestly at all the other reference sources in the PD that are available from archive.org and elsewhere. I have recently finished going through the whole Encyclopedia of Religion for all of its articles and subarticles, like I may have already mentioned, and am now trying to break up the list into more focused lists for some of the relevant WikiProjects. For a lot of the topics relating to several areas and topics which don't get a lot of attention here, those sources are probably some of the best most of us could get ahold of to use to establish what topics are both notable, and, if someone were to go through them to see which articles are longest, that list would probably include most of the more important related topics. I'm also going to try to separate out for some projects, starting with some of the religion ones, lists of articles of greater length in those sources on that basis, which would list both the articles we do and don't have yet. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone on their own would be able to do that for all of them. You've dealt with a lot of people, and I think are a lot more involved in the groups involving article creation, DYK, and that sort of thing, and I was wondering if there were any individuals or groups you thought might be willing to help do something like that. Pianists

I was very pleased to learn (by accident) that you share my appreciation of Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson and Michel Petrucciani . I am also a keen fan of Keith Jarrett. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:40, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Cool. I have most of Bill Evan's albums. I started Peace Piece and am currently trying to expand Alice in Wonderland (song) if you're interested in helping. I like Jarrett but his loud humming and facial expressions do my head in! I'm learning jazz piano slowly but jazz guitar mainly. The day I can play like Joe Pass, Barney Kessel and Robert Conti I'll be a happy bunny! This is good to jam to, F blues, D flat 9-lydian dominant, D 7 raised 9th thing. The good thing is that as I learn on guitar I can apply it to piano. Jazz is really a language. Yesterday I learned to superimpose a G augmented over E flat major 7 which works as the G is the major third, the B the augmented 5th of E flat and E flat the root and an inversion of B7 raised 9th also works over E flat major 7 which is bizarre but it works because the raised 9th of B7 is a D, which is the major 7th of E flat and F sharp augmented is like the upper structure of a E flat minor major 7 chord. It's rather technical stuff but so rewarding to progress and become a more sophisticated musician with a bigger palette of colours. I've been applying the substitutions to my version of Misty! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:19, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Do you like

Paco de Lucia [3] and flamenco. Gypsy groups like the Megitza Quartet [4] also worth a listen. Allan Holdsworth I find highly interesting and a major influence in terms of technical thinking like chord scales and such but I find most of his music too abstract and unmelodic, OK in small doses though. He's technically arguably the most able guitarist of all time though.♦ Dr. Blofeld
09:51, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

I see we appear to have a great deal in common. I was taught to play keyboards on a large church organ from the age of 7. I always annoyed my music teachers by wanting to improvise, and I think that's what got me into jazz at an early age. When I got a bit older, most of my contemporaries had long hair and a guitar strapped across their backs. I could never relate to instruments that only had a few strings. I found the idea dragging my parents baby grand along to muddy blues festivals would be a bit tiresome so I turned to bongoes and a tambourine which led to becoming a semi-pro fusion drummer for many years. I've owned every thing since from a Rhodes, a CP80, a DX7 and some other obscure synthis; now using a rather nice full sized e-piano wired through MIDI to a dedicated Mac running Cubase (which I have been using in various releases for over 20 years). If you like Flamenco rock, you might enjoy Gipsy Kings who very good friends throughout my years in Provence. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 13:34, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Of course, Bamboleo... As a guitarist I prefer more traditional flamenco/more innovative jazz fusion which is technically more difficult but I generally like more commercial Spanish/Latin music and is sometimes easier to listen to! Check out this, the best guitar performance in history in my opinion.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:40, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Excellent, I enjoyed that. Thanks for the link. If I'd known, I'd have uncorked a bottle of Tavel to go with it.Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 14:02, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Ah that would go well watching this. Another of my favourites. Amir John Haddad. A virtual unknown outside the Madrid flamenco community but a brilliant guitarist. I've stolen many chord voicings from him. Can't find anything to produce an article on him unlike Lawson Rollins [5] [6] (two short but very impressive tracks!) I have all of Rollins's albums. My cousin is an aspiring jazz saxophonist studying in Melbourne and a year or two back he jammed with Chick Corea at a jazz seminar and Chick told him that he's a natural and has a big future! That's about as good a compliment as it gets! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:07, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Back to piano, you might find Aki Takase interesting. I jammed (dr) with her once way back in Berlin. An amazing experience. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 14:34, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I've heard of her. I'm sure it was! There's a good pianist who plays with Al Di Meola can't think of his name at the moment - Mario Parmisano.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:07, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Although born and bread in a town steeped in classical music tradition (I actually wrote that Wiki article, or at lest expanded it from a stub), my taste in music (especially as a pianist and drummer) is fairly eclectic and tainted with the advent of Rock, but having been brought up on a diet of Bach (amongst others) from an early age, I thoroughly enjoy anything that is contrapunctive, highly syncopated, and in odd time signatures - Brubeck's 1959 recording of Desmond's Take Five came into my hands around shortly after when I was about 11 or 12 and I just could not leave off playing it on the piano to everyone's annoyance! But I didn't really get into fusion until a couple of years later with The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack. Rhythm is to me, in a sense, more personally important than harmonics because it is something I find easier to understand (or being too lazy to understand) than actual harmony. That's probably why I thoroughly enjoy improvising Ragtime and Boogie for hours on end (privately in my music room of course) - it also helps me let off steam when Wikipedia editors go apeshit. I've often said that I believe Bach to have been the actual inventor of Jazz, although our academic Wikipedia music writers would probably say I'm talking rubbish! I also once had the great honour of jamming (dr) with Gillespie in Quasimodo.
Moerlen, Holdsworth, and McLaughlin are also fusion workers that have greatly impressed me, and of course I can't leave this discussion without mentioning Reinhardt, Grappelli, Jean-Luc Ponty, and for something more off-beat, Nigel Kennedy. My knowledge of obscure but impressive musicians is probably not as good as yours - I'm very much out of touch these days - but don't hesitate to send me more interesting tips, they may become the roots of an article or two I could write for the 'pedia ;) Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:24, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
Well, this discussion has precipitated one new article already. I found Quasimodo was missing so I added it. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 07:00, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Paco and McLaughlin's rendition of Corea's Spain, one of my favourites!! [7] Chopin is my favourite classical composer. He was also one of the most influential jazzers I think, Ballade No. 1 is just pure genius. I frequently spot the CHopin influence in many jazz pianists playing, particularly Petrucciani's. Yes it would be good to get something like the

Birdland (jazz club) something up to GA level sometime...I started Smalls Jazz Club and Ryles Jazz Club a while back, there's tons in Germany, France, Belgium and the Scandinavian countries still missing.♦ Dr. Blofeld

Peacock

I was reverted twiceon the Kapoor article? So everyone has a right to revert me without any reasons and I can't revert anyone because this Wikipedia is about hypocrisies. KK uses a lot of peacock of language. So where is neutralist in you? Who was talking about one mixed over 100 positive review for Fashion and Kapoor is being credited critical acclaim for 10% positive and 90% negative review for Heroine?? Is it a critical acclaim in getting negative reviews?? It is forcing me open a FR and one should not see it as a threat. This should be solved. Always Chopra article don't have to pass these tests. What about peacock language of other FAs. If not corrected on then I have to remove that mixed review from her article since majority was positive. Also, I'll also add she has appeared in 5 of the biggest grossing Indian films seeing other Indian article right now which uses same criteria. Then I'll see how many of you come up for reverting??? It's getting worst.—

I'll try to expand it this week, but looking in google books doesn't appear to be any biographical information on him.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:02, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, it's a bit odd given his status in the song writing world. I wonder why that should be ?
Derek R Bullamore (talk) 13:24, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

I suppose it's because his works were the product rather than him. Lyricists sometimes didn't get as much attention themselves as composers. Voice actors and cinema personnel such as cinematographers and film editors often have very little biographical info available too. I can think of several very notable cinematographers who have next to nothing about themselves documented.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:29, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Meatpuppet closure

Hey,

I've noticed that the Administator's Noticeboard request has just been sitting there for more than a week - how about closing it? I contacted an admin involved about doing that, and he suggested that you would be good at that sort of thing. I'm way to 'wordy' for closure, and it wasn't my complaint to start with.

I'd be happy if we let it go as a sort of 'suspended sentence', as I don't think anything of the sort will happen again anytime soon. Cheers. THEPROMENADER 15:37, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

It's up to an admin to take the appropriate action..♦ Dr. Blofeld
Then why did he suggest you? I assumed by that that you were an admin… an admin did put a tag on that section that would keep it from being archived, so let's just see what happens then. In all my eight years editing, I don't think I've ever seen a Paris-based article/contributor complaint come to fruition. Cheers. THEPROMENADER 16:13, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
Nope I refused admin tools, if I had them I'd have indefinitely blocked you and Der Stat on the first day ;-].♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:16, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
Er, that's a joke, right? Thank god you're not an admin then ; P THEPROMENADER 17:42, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
Hello Dr. B.
WP:AN for an admin to close the discussion about photos at Talk:Paris. Since the debate covers many different ideas I thought it might be hard to close. Starting a formal RfC would be a way to frame the issues better, but I don't know if people would have the patience for that. If an admin closes the discussion they can make the proper allowance for any meatpuppeting. Do you think that this is a worthwhile idea? Thanks, EdJohnston (talk
) 16:58, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

I see. In all honesty think an admin just closing the discussions will make any difference. Der Statistiker has made it perfectly clear that he has no intention to change and I can see it approaching Christmas and him still moaning and taking swipes. I'm concerned that the disruption on the Paris talk page (which I largely try to ignore) will carry on and on.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:03, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

You know, it is exactly for that (your avoiding the page) that the 'fringe opinions' get the better of the article - the 'tire them out' technique works. Look how the Paris article went unedited for ~years~… but edit anything 'La Defense', skyscrapers, 'Paris metropolitan area', economy or demographics and the wingnuts come a-runnin'… and, even lacking facts and references, they always get their way because there's nobody around to oppose them. It would be much appreciated if you stuck around, besides our work there is not done yet: I'm still only preparing to make some edits (collecting sources before I write), so hope you'll be around for that. GA is not good enough for an article like Paris, you know ; ) THEPROMENADER 20:41, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
PS: If you think the article was bad when you got there, you should have seen it on my arrival (late 2004): It was basically a wrongly-referenced list of statistics, because the article spoke everywhere of the 'Paris metropolitan area' (there are no sources for this for anything outside of population) with hardly any mention of (the real) Paris itself. THEPROMENADER 21:00, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
Well, there's over 4 million other articles, Paris is just one of many important articles on here which are in need of attention when you visit the articles.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:35, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Ben Hur

Yes, it's a great film. One of those films that's better than you expect it to be. But then, so is the source material, actually - ever read it? It's far, far better than I expected.

Now...Tom Jones is my favorite. About as perfect as a film can be, if you ask me. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:33, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

I haven't actually watched Lawrence of Arabia in its entirety, either. Come to that, I don't watch a lot of films, really. But I think that Peter O'Toole is a vastly underrated actor. (See Lawrence, Becket, etc.) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:52, 7 September 2013 (UTC)
Ooh, yes. I've seen enough of her on The Soup to think I should maybe bleach my TV for having such garbage on it. But then...well, let's just say that there's a lot of craptastic stuff on nowadays. Aalborg

Well, I've written another highly critical comment on the talk page. But if the comment hurts feelings, so be it: we must endeavor to get things right.

That matter quite aside, the GA reviewer writes: At times, this article reads like a travel article published by the Chamber of Commerce. Exactly my impression (though the article has improved since I said much the same thing). You question this. Well, comprehensively showing how and where the phenomenon occurs would take time, but here's a start. Use your browser to search for the string "fine". The word (and its inflected forms) are used often, in a way that I associate with either a hurried writer on architecture (e.g. Pevsner with the whole of England to examine, evaluate and write up) or a tourist office. It's permissible for the former, because we know that (e.g.) Pevsner is the arbiter and we trust him; for the latter, we dismiss it as mere PR puff.

NB I'm not saying that what's called fine isn't fine, just saying that claims of fineness have to be backed up (a dreary business, I know) or cut.

And I do appreciate all the work that has gone into this article, and hope it gets recognized as a GA. -- Hoary (talk) 10:21, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

No need to be apologetic. The article has been recently expanded, so it's natural that the prose in parts might not be highly polished. I personally tend to avoid such words like "great" and "fine" and avoid "recently" as the article soon becomes out of date, but it was written by a few editors. We'll get there... Question that in parts it might sound a little too touristy guide-like? Not at all, but I believe that it has sufficient content to make it worthy of GA and that polishing can be done while it is being reviewed. I have just asked Christine to mention any sentence which she believes falls under that category to help improve it during the review.. But if you're going to start nit-picking and accusing editors of plagiarism and doing your best to find errors, then it comes across as petty... Feel free to check for errors and problems, but try to be a little more discreet about it.. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:04, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

"anybody typiing Amir John Haddad is clearly not looking for the tennis player"

Absolutely correct. Amir Heddad, however, redirects to Amir-John Heddad and thus there is the potential for people to mistype 'Hedad' as 'Heddad' hence my addition of a hatnote.--Launchballer 21:03, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

Yes, but they'd also have to type -John after Amir... It's necessary to have the link on the Amir Heddad page but not vice versa..♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:06, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

I'm not so sure. It's quite common for people to omit middle names, so the redirect "Amir Heddad" exists. However, people could actually think Hedad's name is spelt "Heddad" and so end up at the wrong page.--Launchballer 23:12, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

The Haunting-staircase

Right now, we need to find out the source of the photo further back than on the net. Have seen some blogs using the same shot, but none of them offers any clue as to how to attribute/credit it. This will need to be non-free, for a start, since at this moment, I don't know of any free photos of the staircase. Taking it from a website will most likely make it "disappear". ;-)

Did find a different shot of the staircase in a book, which can be attributed to that.

  • Title Cinema of the Psychic Realm: A Critical Survey
  • Author Paul Meehan
  • Publisher McFarland, 2010
  • , 9780786454747

My advice would be to get a copy of the photo in the book and go with it. There's a lot written on the "staircase" shots from the film in various film books, so it wouldn't be hard to reference why it's important. HTH, We hope (talk) 15:38, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Wiki Philosophy

I was just reading your Wiki Philosophy on your User Page, Dr. Blofeld and I was wondering if part of the problem is that editors working in the new pages patrol quickly delete articles that don't appear promising when they are actually still a work in progress and the author didn't realize that the references had to be complete when they posted the article. I see a lot of comments from new editors who are upset that their articles have been deleted, perhaps prematurely. I also see some Editors, in the name of combating "vandalism", have their entire list of contributions consist of reverts of other Editors' work. Needless to say, their Talk Pages make for interesting reading.

I understand that you believe there are far too many stub articles that will never be finished, don't you also think that we have some editors with itchy fingers on the delete button? Also, in places like AfD and CfD, all you need is three or four "Delete" votes (and no one but the author saying "Oppose") to banish an article. There isn't enough participation in these areas to prevent premature deletions.

You've been working on WP much longer than I so I just wondered if you would agree or disagree with this opinion. Liz Read! Talk! 21:15, 12 September 2013 (UTC) I agree with you. But if we had strict controls on quality in the first place it wouldn't happen anyway.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:57, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

GAN

Hi, Dr. Blofeld. You are one of the best content contributors that ever was; and besides, we both have worked together before. I thought perhaps, I may interest you in my first ever GAN submission. I've worked on this article for weeks and I think it's now ready for a discerning second pair of eyes. Please take a look if you can. Thanks in advance, Poeticbent talk 14:25, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

City Lights

Hey, just noticed you put this up for GA. Good luck with it--one of my all-time favorites! If I get a chance soon I'll give it a read and see if there's anything I can add. -- Khazar2 (talk) 15:21, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

Would be good if you could find something on themes, but I think it's certainly GA quality as it is. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:44, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

Tom Jones

Excellent - tell me what you think. My own favorite scene is the one with the tavern dinner. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:27, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

Chaplin's good too - ever seen any of his later work, when sound film became available? Limelight has some wonderful touches. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 23:18, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
Yes - that's the version. I do remember the scene - I haven't seen any Mike Myers films, though. (Well...a few scenes from the first Austin Powers, but that's about it.)
Actually, I quite like Molly in general.  :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 13:56, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
Ah, yes - Diane Cilantro, I always want to call her.
But it's a very strong cast - I don't think there's anyone there I don't like. Although Hugh Griffiths is always an especial favorite. Ever seen How to Steal a Million? --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:38, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
Don't forget Peter O'Toole. Why he never won an Oscar I shall never understand. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:28, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
Never seen it, but I like George C. Scott. One of Patton's ancestors was governor of my fair state briefly - he's buried a stone's throw from one of my ancestors in Richmond, actually. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:36, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
Yep. Sounds like everything I ever heard about Patton. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:39, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

U Bein Bridge

Just a quick heads-up... I created U Bein Bridge and, looking at "What links here", noticed that you once considered making the article. Please check it out as I'm guessing that you have a better understanding of the area than I do. Cheers, violet/riga [talk] 14:00, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Looks good, nice one.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:46, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Fatimid architecture

Did you see Ssilvers's suggestion on my talk page about how to test the water? Sound advice, meseems. You and Aymatth might like to ponder. Tim riley (talk) 17:40, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Disraeli

Unless you feel strongly inclined I hereby excuse you from further Dizzy Duties. We have had a huge response, and we feel ready to close the PR very soon and march on to FAC. If we thereby miss any further input from the Doctor we shall look forward to seeing it at FAC if you do us the kindness of looking in there. Tim riley (talk) 17:59, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Bulgarain Wedding Music

Please see Template:Did you know nominations/Bulgarian wedding music. The observation is to the last para where video reference has been cited. I could not find any book reference to further support it. Can you help resolve this issue? or shall I delete the section?--Nvvchar. 01:14, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Ian McCurrach

The article Ian McCurrach has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No assertion of notability, and no evidence that it meets
WP:BIO

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Happy POV-pusing

You keep introducing mistakes. You are clearly one of the most pitiful people here on Wikipedia. The Banner talk 13:56, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

Apologies, but admittedly I am currently having severe motivation problems on wikipedia, at the moment I'm thinking what's the point you know, most of the website is of poor quality and most articles need work, and a lot of editors here are idle or just plain mean to each other... For a positive person such as myself I often find wikipedia to be something of killjoy. I'm sure most sane editors often question why they bother with wikipedia from time to time. I have a big interest in films and jazz guitar and piano which takes up more of my time than wikipedia these days, but I'll try to put in a major effort to leave you some pointers tomorrow.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:40, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for posting comments on the PR page Dr. Blofeld, but is that all the comments u have? If yes, I can solve them all. Kailash29792 (talk) 12:46, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

The article is relatively short, why would you expect me to have masses of problems with it?♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:53, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

But thanks for the help anyway, and nice talking to you. Kailash29792 (talk) 14:09, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

If you'd nommed it for GA I could have reviewed it with those comments..♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:11, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
