Notes
- ^ a b Because of their brief reigns and defeats, the rebels Peter Delyan and Constantine Bodin are only rarely counted and enumerated as Peter II and Peter III.[1]
- ^ Often alternatively numbered as Peter IV, counting the two unsuccessful rebels who preceded him and also assumed the name Peter.[1]
- ^ The alternate designation Ivan I, counted in the numbering of the later Ivan II, is due to "Kaloyan" simply being an ornate form of the same name. He is regarded as the first Ivan since preceding kings with the name (Ivan Vladislav and Ivan Asen I) used double names.[2]
- ^ Traditionally designated as Michael II Asen. This designation and enumeration rests on Boris I assuming the name Michael after his baptism and "Asen" being a family name rather than part of the regnal name. Boris I is however rarely counted as Michael I, as can be gathered from the enumerations of the subsequent Boris II and Boris III. "Asen" was also not used simply as a family name but was part of Michael's full regnal name, making "Michael Asen I" the more accurate designation.[2]
- ^ Often designated as Konstantin Tih, a problematic designation since "Tih" should be understood as a family connection or nickname ("the son of Tih") rather than an element of his regnal name; like several other later emperors, this emperor assumed the name Asen and appears in nearly all medieval sources as Constantine Asen.[3]
- Kaloyan (the only ruler to use "Ivan" without a second name) as Ivan I.[4]
- ^ Traditionally designated as Michael Shishman or Michael III Shishman, he ruled as "Michael Asen", Shishman being a patronymic added by modern historians rather than something that was actually in use. "Michael Asen III" is seen as a more accurate designation.[5]
