Giovanni Martinotti is an Italian
Giovanni Martinotti studied Medicine at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore[1] (Rome), where he graduated cum laude in 2000. He specialized in psychiatry and completed a dissertation under the supervision of Bruno Callieri about the Phenomenology of Embodiment. He then earned a PhD in Neuroscience in the same institution. Giovanni Martinotti obtained a bachelor degree in Philosophy and a master degree in Anthropology at the Università Sapienza (Rome). His post-graduate research mainly focuses on Addiction Psychiatry, with a specific interest in dual diagnosis, complications and sequelae of addiction, pharmacological treatment of addictive disorders, brain stimulation techniques, novel psychoactive substances and psychedelics.
Giovanni Martinotti has worked in the field of Addiction Psychiatry throughout all of his SSN consultant career, starting at the Day-Hospital of Psychiatry and Addiction at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome and then the acute psychiatric ward of the S. Annunziata Hospital in Chieti. He has had clinical experiences in the UK (NHS Addiction Treatment Centre, Queen Mary’s Hospital, London), in Spain (Unidad de Psiquiatria, Hospital can Misses, Ibiza) and Brazil (Clinica de Medicina Geral, Riberao Preto).
He has authored or co-authored more than 300 scientific manuscripts on Impact Factor journals, one monography and 4 books. He is a highly cited psychiatrist, recognized by the
In 2008 he was awarded the European College Neuropsycho-Pharmacology (ECNP) award, with the article “Pregabalin vs. Naltrexone in alcohol dependence: a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, comparison trial”. In 2014 he won the Fellowship Award of the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology (JSPN). He is the Secretary of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) section of Ecology, Psychiatry and Mental Health since 2015. He has been president of the Young Section of the Italian Psychiatric Association for 8 years (2012-2020).
He is currently scientific director of the SRP Villa Maria Pia[2] in Rome and head of the Emerging Drugs and Brain Stimulation Unit, Department of Neuroscience, Imaging, Clinical Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Biomedical Technology (ITAB) in Chieti.
In the anthropological area he reported data from different missions (Papua New Guinea, Iran Jaya, South Ethiopia, Amazonia, Laos, East-Siberia and Kamchatka), publishing scientific reports on the psychoactive effects of plants and herbs, including ayahuasca. Giovanni Martinotti is currently a lecturer at the Sagara Psychotherapy School, with an ethnopsychiatric orientation.
Giovanni Martinotti was a pupil of Bruno Callieri and continues his legacy of an anthropo-phenomenological approach to psychiatry, built on Edith Stein’s account of empathic relation and Martin Buber’s concept of intersubjectivity. He is on the scientific board of the Italian Society for Psychopathology.
